A 12-year-old boy was attacked by two dogs just before noon Saturday after he climbed into a fenced-in yard in the Sleepy Hollow subdivision to retrieve a ball, Campbell County Sheriff Bill Pownall said.

The boy, whose name was not released, was initially approached by the black and white Great Dane and a brown Labrador retriever mix in what appeared to be a friendly manner, but things quickly turned ugly and the dogs started attacking him.

The boy was knocked down, then curled into a fetal position and began to scream, Pownall said, at which point a neighbor heard him and arrived on the scene.

The neighbor fended off the dogs with a stick until law enforcement officers arrived, at which point the animals were contained.

The boy was taken to Campbell County Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for bites to his neck, arms and the back of his head, Pownall said. None of the injuries were serious, and both dogs were current on all of their shots.

The dogs' owners weren't home at the time, and were contacted after the incident. The owners will most likely take action against the animals, which are quarantined, Pownall said.

 Climbing into a yard with strange dogs - smart.

First let me say that I feel sorry for the kid. But he needs to be told what's right and what's wrong. I walked my dog the other day along fences and a kid showed up behind me. I said "HI". He showed me a note and told me that his ball flew in that yard and he will put a note on the door for the owner. I thought - great kid. The dogs...should be praised since they did exactly what they should do when a stranger comes into the yard.

I dont think we are getting the whole story either. I would bet the child started to run. the chase is on, the dogs knocked him down and his screaming set them off....dogs can sense fear in people. WHY dont people teach their klds these things? NEVER run from a dog. Stand perfectly still if you have to, dont look it in the eye...it's SO easy to teach....oh, and DONT ever go in a strangers yard with a dog outside....

I feel bad for the kid. But the dogs shouldnt have to suffer because of it.

They were only defending their territory....

Yes I think that parents should teach their childern about animals. I was a lucky one, i was told about animals. when i was around 10 my grandmas neighbors had 4 GS that were trained gard dogs and they had a good fence but one day 2 of their dogs got out and me and a friend was walking down the street next to their house. My friend ran lucky for her they hadnt seen her only me I froze and watched them but not looking them in the eye and with in min. the owner was outside to get them, they were good owners very concious of their pets. I was nervous but not fearful. I knew how they could sence fear.
