SizzleDog Posted April 19, 2004 Posted April 19, 2004 I'm just now sure how to bring up the issue with my parents. They're paying for my tuition, and they consider my education my #1 priority. The dog I'm thinking about getting is a VERY small (4.5lb, 9" at the shoulder) Toy Fox Terrier - 16 months old, female, sweet dog. The first step is to see if she and Ilsa woud get along (which I think they will). Second step is to see how my classes go next year - I need to know for sure if I can handle a second dog. Third step (and the scariest/hardest step) is convincing my parents that I can handle her. The dog is paper trained, crate trained, and obedience trained - she is being spayed and is being potty trained (no more paper training). The breeder has already agreed to take her for a semester when I have to go to Rome in a couple years. The dog only eats 1/4 Cup of food per day - she's tiny! Do you guys have any insight as to how I can break it to my parents? Those of you withmultiple dog households - how much more work is it when you add a second dog? Quote
courtnek Posted April 19, 2004 Posted April 19, 2004 well, there's always extra work...although this dog is so tiny probably not alot...but still, if it's a terrier it will need exercise, and mental stimulation. They can be feisty...and the shots are expensive as well....as far as your parents, only you can judge that...with your going away to school, and having a dog that needs exercise, is it really a good idea? Why not wait until your classes are done, and you can spend that time with the dogs? Quote
SizzleDog Posted April 20, 2004 Author Posted April 20, 2004 coutnek, I already have a 2 year old Doberman - she's involved in obedience and agility, so I know how to handle a high-energy dog. This won't be my first year of college - I've been in college for awhile. Physical and mental stimulation wont' be a problem - just look at what I do with my dobe... we're going to the National Specialty next October for obedience. Dobes are basically terrier/mastiff crosses - and one of my mentors shows and breeds Standard Schnauzers. Believe me, I love terriers and I know how to handle them. Expenses also won't be a problem - I already pay for food, shots, etc. for my dobe, and I keep a $1000 (minimum) emergency fund for her in case she develops GDV or needs emergency veterinary treatment. kendalyn Posted April 20, 2004 Posted April 20, 2004 If you think it's the right time for you to be bringing another dog into your life, just come right out and tell your parents. There's no other way to do it is there? It sounds like you think they will not like the idea. If they say no you only have 2 options. Accept it and move on, or become financially independent and get the dog. Just present a good case, and if they say yes, than great. But if they say no, I would just forget about it. There are lots of dogs out there and you'll have the opportunity to get another one at a later date. Quote
imported_fila Posted April 21, 2004 Posted April 21, 2004 Sizzle................I cant picture you with a small dog. Guess because of Ilsa being so large. I consider you a BIG dog person, lol. Good luck in whatever you decide. You will make the right decision. :laola: Quote
Jetta_Pup Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 deleted and out? im confused anyway. Sizzle i agree w/ Fila, small dontdont seem right!...lol but i know youwill love her and care for her as well as you do ilsa. now the parents is anoter story..lol tell them and give them time. my hubby didnt like the idea of Jetta but hes just as attached to her as i am if not more...LOL Quote
Jetta_Pup Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 omg, how stupid can i be, i should have read all the signs its the petfinder police!!!! carefull their msg board stinks as bad as their attitude. anyway K is there anyway to stop the "guest" posting, were never gonna get rid of them and all they are going to do is critisize people here and i would hate to see that kind of contamination of such a great board, one of the reasons i came here :) Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 What's the matter, Jetta, aka Moms_ferrets? You're pro-population crisis attitude scare you onto this BYB board? Quote
Jetta_Pup Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 scared where? no not scared i prefer tobe where the attitude is a little less demonic. and where does BYB fitin all of this? pro population? if you say so. im fixing to stop forums all together. cant seem to get away from you peopl your like a bad virous that wont go away. i have my own life that does NOT include PF. nor do i ever want it to. i stay in my own little world you all stay in yours, why is that so hard to do? you just get off on prying in otherpeoples business? if anyone wanted to share news w/ you all they would on PF. seems no one wants you in their business. neither do i so good bye dogo untill the fleas leave. Jetta_Pup Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 FYI its not AKA moms_ferrets, i droped thatname along time ago when i droped your hypicritical forum... wait what was that horse breeding on pf, you all promote that? ohhh well maybe you all should do some research on PMU pregnant mare urine, you may find it interesting you know baby horses sent to slaughter houses cause they cant find homes in the US Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 Looks like you hit a nerve there, Petfinder####! By the way, Jetta, you're abused boxer looks like he/she's in an awful lot of pain. Hope you can live with yourself. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 For your info, Fila, only a few PF people are okay with horse breeding. Less than a handful. We know all about estrogen replacements like Premarin. We also know that cropping a dog's ears that late is animal abuse. Quote
Jetta_Pup Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 i know my boxer isnt great im sorry shes horrably deformed  Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 sizzle, i'm in the same situation as you. i'm in my third year of college and living with my mom. she has four cats and i have roxy. i've broached the subject of getting another dog several times to no avail, even though i am 100% responsible for roxy. i pay for everything she needs (food, vet, toys, clothes), clean up after her, walk her, etc. the whole nine yards. even though having another dog wouldn't impact anyone in my house the at all other than myself and roxy, she's still against it. i'm considerring doing the "show up with a new dog" routine this summer. haha. my mom always says no more animals, but falls in love when they get there. she didn't even want me to get roxy, but now spoils the crap outta her! drjeffrock Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 Since when did Dogo turn into a BYB messageboard? Seems like every day or two we get someone asking about where to find a breeder, and 15 replies about trying www.petfinder.com or a local rescue/shelter. The petfinder site is great. Unfortunately you shmucks representing it are not. I dunno about the whole drama deal with you guys, so I cant comment on Fila or sizzle or whoever. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted May 11, 2004 Posted May 11, 2004 Agreed. Petfinder is a wonderful site. But, there is entirely too much CRAP going on. Sizzle, it sounds like you have done your homework on this second dog. They're cute little buggers, aren't they? I don't think it should be too much trouble taking her on. Ilsa is used to other dogs and seems, from all of your pics, to do very well with others. We all know how bright she is! Sounds like all the work, ie. pottytraining, will be done. You have a place for her when you leave. She doesn't eat much. I say go for it! BTW, i've never been bashed on PF(for all you PF people). And i haven't gotten a dog from a breeder since i was a kid and the 'rents got that one. But, i will eventually get a dog i can do conformation with. I just don't like all the bashing and it is getting to be a bit much when someone drags things to the forum that weren't even brought up on there. It's her choice and putting her down will only turn her away from the PF boards and that would be a loss. No one can say she doesn't give great advice! I wouldn't touch that other post with a 10 ft. pole. Quote
Queen Bitch Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 DMetria, you seem to have a good head on your shoulders as opposed to some people who feel the need to follow people around and make abusive names, why don't you join? Quote
Cairn6 Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 Gee whiz what are the odds. I just happened to be looking up information on jealous dogs and ended up on this site. I have been to petfinder too are they somehow related because there seems to be so many of the same people on both boards. Quote
courtnek Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 so tell us about your jealous dog....we'll try to help if we can. 8) Quote
Cairn6 Posted May 16, 2004 Posted May 16, 2004 Well the only one of my dogs that may have an issue is Toto and the pup isn't here yet so I am trying to get all the information to stop him from being jealous. And if he is jealous to know immediately how to help the situation. Quote
bk_blue Posted May 16, 2004 Posted May 16, 2004 WTF is with the first page of the thread? Have there been messages deleted or something, because it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Otherwise I must be wearing my bimbo hat today. :P Frankly, whatever goes on over at PF CAN STAY THERE. NOT HERE. Get it??? Quote
courtnek Posted May 16, 2004 Posted May 16, 2004 thank you K. Both for explaining it, and doing it. It's getting really tiresome having to fight with unknown "Guests" all the time....methinks these people have way too much time on their hands, to be following someone around and badmouthing them on another forum. Why dont you people get jobs, and lives? Somewhere OTHER than here??? :agrue: Quote
courtnek Posted May 16, 2004 Posted May 16, 2004 HEY! I;m a BLONDE!!!         Quote
bk_blue Posted May 17, 2004 Posted May 17, 2004 courtnek, I am a blonde too- I am a natural blonde but had my hair dark for years- now that I'm back to a reasonably natural colour it's quite strange how people treat me now- apparently I am way more approachable now than when I had my witch-like black hair. *shrug* - people now think I'm German (ok I do look very Nordic now and the long German/Dutch surname doesn't help lol) instead of Italian/Islander/Greek/Polish which is what I got when I had dark hair... BTW thank you K for clearing it up!! I was afraid the peroxide had got to my brain!!! 8) Quote
courtnek Posted May 17, 2004 Posted May 17, 2004     Oh I have no problem with it, I actually find some of the "dumb blonde" jokes funny... my favorite - "what do you call an intelligent blonde?" "a Golden Retriever"     Quote
