Commands in German

Does anybody know some commands in German? I'm going to be living with a German Exchange student this summer and I thought it would be nice to teach Buck how to sit, laydown, etc... in German :)

I would go look on google or something but I'm afraid I wouldn't get the right form of the word or something. I don't want to teach Buck the wrong form.

Do you think teaching him the german commands will confuse him? He's got sit, laydown, shake down cold. He knows more than that but I thought I would stick with Sit, Down and Shake. I could do Leave It too but I'd rather not. If it confuses him learning both words, I won't do it though. Does anyone else have their dogs recognize two different languages for the same command?

It's siitz for sit (that's not too much of a stretch)

Platz for down (as in laydown) That's easy to remember. It sounds like of like plop :lol:

I didn't see shake. I'll have to check around for that one. It's a good thing one of them had pronounciations because I don't want to say it wrong and then have it not work when she says it

shake would be "gib fuss" (literally translated "give foot").
gib is pronounced to rhyme with lip, and fuss is "foos".

Should I do it by basically starting over and teaching him like I did the first time, only using a German command? Is there a better way to do it?

The hardest part about learning a language is learning to "think" in that language...instead of trying to translate every sentence. Since dogs dont think in any language, teaching him dual commands in two different languages wont confuse him. He is only responding to the words you say, not the meaning behind them.

Babies can pick up two languages easily, and be fluent in both. So can a dog. If you have taught hand commands as well, that will make it easier.
Use the german word, and the hand command...he'll pick it up in no time.

I have a friend who's dog responds to both English and Spanish. She spoke both languages when her children were babies, so they would learn both, and the dog kinda learned along with them.

My uncle speaks to BK and Tomson in German, always has. They seem to understand it, in fact my uncle is the only person who gets BK's undivided attention and obedience (mainly because he doesn't put up with BK's preciousness :wink: ), obviously the rest of us need to brush up on our language skills. :D

That's so cool that you're going to teach Buck German commands for the exchange student.
I had a print out of German commands but I could only figure out how to say sitz and platz. I don't think Majie really knows the words but obeys my hand and arm signals. :)
