I found this website a little while ago and wanted to post it up. A pair of sisters named Sunnan and Kyenan Kum started the ONLY animal shelter in Korea and have been doing their best to keep it up and running.

The way dogs and cats are treated in Korea is horrendous. I had no idea before reading her website. I think these two women are pretty amazing and I wish them the best of luck in running their shelter and changing the minds of as many people as possible.

Here's the link if you want to check it out: http://www.koreananimals.org/index.htm

WARNING! If you go into the sections of the website titled Animal Issues or anything labeled Korean Dog Market, there will be some pretty disturbing pictures. The rest of the pages are ok, but those dealing with Animal Issues or the Korean Dog Market could make you lose you dinner.

The section about myths about cats and dogs is an eye opener. :o

Also, they are asking for help in stopping a new amendment that will make it easier for the horrible abuse to continue in Korea.

The amendment at first seems like it is limiting the dog for food market, but in reality it is really more of a publicity stunt. The amendment allows inhumane treatment of animals as long as it is not visible to the public eye. I guess the Korean government figures that as long as they can't see it, it really doesn't exist.

To learn more about the amendment and why it is a bad thing, look here: http://www.koreananimals.org/amendment_problems.htm

Sunnan is asking people to write the Korean Prime Minister about the amendment. Here is the e-mail address: m_opm@opm.go.kr

There is also a snail mail address on the website.

Well, I shouldve listened to your warning about the pictures. Of course I was eating as I was looking. Not a good mix! I didnt vomit luckily but lets just say I wont be finishing my food. Thats so horrible about them butchering those poor dogs(and cats and most likely other animals too)!!!!

Koreans believe that dogs that die painfully will release more adrenaline into their flesh, creating a more potent and flavorful meat.

OMG!!!! Its bad enough they kill them for food but to actually torture them is just sickening!!! :madgo: :zly7: :chainsaw1: :2gunfire:  :bad-words:

..and Im going to write a letter about the amendment as soon as I have time. Im so happy these people are doing their best to help animals in a country where help for them seems to be hopeless...

i used to live in korea. and i gotta tell you, our culture is different from yours. it is rare that a big dog would live inside, and in the country, they just roam freely around the farm. most of the people in the cities and kids are against dog eating.

i mean, there really is no reason to. i dont know how they taste, but im pretty sure cows and chickens taste better.

some people eat it because it is good for them, just like koreans eat the weirdest shit. lol. i tried some frogs and grasshoppers and all that.

but dont get the wrong idea. most of korea now is urban and dog eating is pretty rare. i went to an traditional market and i saw some dogs hanging in a butcher market. i was disgusted.

...i dont know maybe itll end by the next generation or two. its just culture. pets just arent that common.

I don't have a problem with culture differences when they aren't inhumane. What I saw in those pictures was pretty cruel. And what you saw in the marketplace sounds pretty bad too.

I hope it does fade away as Korea becomes more modern, but the problem is that children see the way those dogs are treated. I'm sure not all of them will grow up believing that it is OK, but some will and that is a big problem.

That's is horrible!... i don't understand those cultures, killing whales, dogs, bears, dolphins...
At the end, traditions, religions and stuff like that become an excuse to do the worst things in the world.

This is so disgusting.

I have no problems with other cultures, but this is just cruel!

I saw this one document from the TV once about dogs that are killed for their skin to make coats for humans. The skins are told to be fox skins or wolf skins but in fact they are colored dog skins. They showed one peace where they tied the dog to a (deep sigh)... this still makes me cry... they tie the dog into a fence from it's collar ALIVE. They pull the dog's hind legs back and start cutting and tearing the skin off the screaming dog. I couldn't watch it anymore after that. I had to turn to another channel. I can still hear the screaming of that dog in my head. I wish I hadn't seen that.
They skinned the dog alive. My guess is that the dog must pass out because of the pain at some point...
And if you would have seen the places the dogs were kept.. the filth... the pure terror in their eyes as they tried to cramb into one corner of the house they were kept in. Actually it wasn't even a house... Just four walls and a roof. No floor... or mabye there was, but I couldn't atleast see it from the mixture of pee and poop covering the floor.
I don't remember where this was shot, but on the other hand... I don't even want to remember this at all.
Sorry... I can't write anymore... the tears are starting to roll down my cheeks...

Atleast you know now how strongly I feel about this...

  I wasn't even going to look at the pictures, I've seen some like that before on another page, also with laboratory dogs. I was raging mad for days, I couldn't tell someone about it without choking up or crying, it was very sad. It wouldn't be so bad if they wouldn't torture them first. It still upsets me alot. I too wish I'd never looked at some pictures, I'm glad I didn't see that film I couldn't handle it.
