imported_nea Posted March 27, 2004 Posted March 27, 2004 I need some ideas for some good, tasty, homemade treats. :) Here are the two ones that I've made Web so far. Liver cut raw liver into bitesized cubes boil for a few minutes put on an ungreased cookie sheet and let it dry on low heat for a while Heart same as with the liver. He prefers these treats over the storebought Frolics that he gets most of the time, and when he really wants something he'll do anything to get it, so training is the funnest for both of us when he has good treats. But I'm getting sick of buying hearts and livers while the other people in my class buy chocolate and candy. The one store that I know sells hearts and livers is right by my school so I end up buying the stuff then. If there are any other good treats that could be made with more everyday ingridents I'd be glad! And if they aren't sticky it'd be good. I like having the treats in my pocket. :) Quote
courtnek Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 boiled chicken, cut into cubes and then refrigerated are good. same with any kind of beef. you can get the cheaper cuts of chicken and beef if you simmer them, it takes longer but they taste better and once refrigerated, they dry out a little. yu could also line your pocket with a plastic bag, to keep it clean. even wax paper will work for lining a pocket. gooeydog Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 Nea, did the livers smell up the house too? I tried making some for our dogs a while back, but they smelled horrible, and the smell lingered for days afterwards :o A good training treat (used in moderation) is hot dogs cut into small cubes and dried in the oven... not messy, so you can shove a bunch into a pocket, and the dogs love them. I make cookies for ours too, using a modified oatmeal cookie recipe. 1/2 stick margarine, or you can use 1/4 cup cooking oil if you have one you prefer (i use safflower oil) 2 eggs (you can use an extra if you like to make the mix more smooth) 1 1/2 cup flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 3 cups oats 3 or 4 tablespoons of peanut butter parsley flakes You can also add in apple or carrot, diced up. Mix the margarine/oil and eggs. Add in baking soda and flour, mix again. Add oats, peanut butter, parsely (and apples/carrots if used), mix again. You may have to add a bit of water if the mix is too goopy, I usually have to add around a cup. Plop spoonfuls onto baking sheet and cook at 350 until browned. If you want them to be more dried out (crunchy), cook for 5 mins at 350, then turn down to 300 and leave until brown. Take them out and let them cool off, then store. Makes several dozen "normal" sized cookies, and I keep them in the fridge. Quote
TDG Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 the microwaved hot dog slices are very attractive to a lot of dogs. :) you can also use uncooked hot dog pieces if they aren't too greasy for you. alternative: very small (pea sized) pieces of mild cheese. when i know that my husband is out of the house for most of the day, i make liver biscotti. for that i puree 1 pound of liver with enough organic whole-wheat flour, an egg, half a teaspoon of baking powder and a bit of parsley and garlic in the blender until it has a smooth, creamy consistency. then pour it on a greased (important! do not forget to grease!!) baking sheet and bake it at low to medium temperature until a toothpick you stick into the "cake" comes out clean without any "dough" attached. this is cut into some smaller, pea sized pieces for training and a few bigger cookie-sized pieces as special treats. it keeps for a pretty long time and doesn't have to be refrigerated if you make sure it's cooked through and dry enough. be forewarned tho: it doesn't smell pleasant at all while baking. lol! :watpliwy: Quote
abker17 Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 I don't have any recipes to add, but just as a word of warning, don't ever bake dog biscuits that have tuna in them. :o   We had to learn that the hard way, my mom was really upset it took the house like two days to completly air out. Quote
Carolk9s Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 My dogs LOVE salmon brownies. You can use any canned fish, salmon, jack mackerel, I guess even sardines if you wanted to mash them. You can make them like brownies so they are cakelike or spread the mix into a LARGE baking sheet for a thinner, drier product. I just use a 15 oz can of salmon, dump it in a BIG bowl, mix in 1 or 2 eggs, and enough wheat flour to make a semi stiff dough. Mix with your hands then let your dogs lick them afterwards. 8) Pour mixture into a GREASED baking dish, 8x8 or 9x9 for a thicker, moister result or a large greased jellyroll baking sheet for a thinner, drier product. Bake at about 350 for 30 minutes or so. For the drier, thinner product, turn the heat down to about 200-225, let sit in the oven for many hours. Cool, cut the brownies and refrigerate or break apart the thinner product. I do keep the thin stuff in the freezer just because I had so much of it. The dogs just love it. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted March 29, 2004 Posted March 29, 2004 I don't have a recipe...however, I have been looking for some...when you boil the liver, then dry it in a warm oven...how long do they last? Do you have to refridgerate them? As for the hot dogs...do dogs have problems with breaking down the fat in their blood...I wouldn't want to give my dogs a heart attack either...just thinking...anyone know? I do like the liver idea...I can cook that outside and then use my roasting oven out side...I HATE the smell of liver cooking...YUCK!!! Sure don't want the house to smell like that...I bet the dogs would like the smell :Dog_run: Thanks...if I find any recipes, I will share them. Anna Quote
TDG Posted March 29, 2004 Posted March 29, 2004 dogs metabolize fat in a completely different way than humans and need it in their diet for skin and coat health. they do not have cholesterol problems etc. either, so fat is safe and healthy to feed, but of course (like anything else) not in excess. if you microwave the hotdog pieces, most of the fat melts out anyway, that's why you use the paper towel. :) Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 Nea, did the livers smell up the house too? I tried making some for our dogs a while back, but they smelled horrible, and the smell lingered for days afterwards To air out the house (after the stinkly stuff) I roast a handful of coffee beans. (Or a few heads of garlic doused in oil). Works for me. :) Quote
science_doc Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 I tried to make the liver treats............ only the smell and look of the liver made me gag until I threw up! So I decided to throw away all the treats and stick to the store bought variety. Now everone knows why I'm going to be a Ph.D. and not an M.D. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 Nea, did the livers smell up the house too? I tried making some for our dogs a while back, but they smelled horrible, and the smell lingered for days afterwards Yeah they did! But I left the balcony door open and went for a walk with Web and when I got back it didn't smell too bad, luckily, and hardly any outside of the kitchen. I'm going to try some of the things, thanks for the ideas!:) Quote
