We went into Petco and Petsmart tonight looking all over southeastern H*ll for some food since our regular incompetent, unreliable store didn't have any, though "it'll be here Thursday" and here it is Thursday and me with 10 hungry dogs and no freakin' food and having to drive all the way into Tallahassee and STILL couldn't find what we were looking for.... ok, another rant.

Anyway, so we're walking around Petco with Perry and Pauly. Hubby had one and I had the other. Some young macho junior johnny bad arse had a teeny tiny Pit Bull puppy that looked barely old enough to be away from its mother. Nevermind the fact that the puppy was just wandering loose on the floor, no leash, not carried, the guy had the audacity to look at my husband walking a Standard Poodle and point and laugh almost dead in his face. I can understand where it could be funny, but this guy was outright ridiculing him

Now, if this guy needs a particular dog to make him feel like a man, that's his business. It says a lot about his character, though, that he's so insecure as to laugh at someone else. We should have had Peanut with us (the Toy Poodle). Hubby usually carries her. That way, the guy would have had something to really make his day.

A real prize winner, that guy. I wonder if it ever crossed his mind that he just might be exposing such a young puppy to all kinds of crap by letting him wander loose where other dogs have been. Of course, he was asking the clerk where the cheapest food they had was. Way to go there, buddy. I hope your dog grows up healthy and happy and YOU get worms. :x

I hate it when people make fun of poodles. Especially Standard Poodles! Why do people think they are sissy dogs!? It's really annoying. They're very athletic and just as fun and cool as any other breed. I just hate that sissy dog stigma.

Sometimes it seems like people only like poodles when they're mixed with something else.

Yeah, and why do they have to be so hateful? I'm perfectly content with the knowledge that Poodles aren't for everyone, but I wonder how he'd have felt if I'd pointed at him and laughed and said out loud, "LOOK!! SOME DUDE OVER THERE THINKS HE'S TOUGH BECAUSE HE GOT HIMSELF A TOUGH LOOKING DOG! SEEMS TO ME LIKE HE MIGHT BE COMPENSATING FOR LACK OF SOMETHING ELSE; KNOW WUT I MEAN??" Or would it be better if I put on gaudy costume jewelry, doused myself with cheap perfume, spackled my face with makeup goo and then carried myself like a Poodle snob? One stereotype deserves another, I reckon.

It reminds of the time a neighbor approached my husband at our fence and was asking questions about Perry. He seemed fascinated, but then he said, "well, I couldn't do it... I'd look gay walking a dog like that." My husband didn't miss a beat when he said, "how does a dog make you LOOK gay and why would you care?" Some people... :-?

I wish some of these Poodle-o-phobes could see some of my best grooming clients. I work in a really rural area, pretty much a farm community. I get lots of big ol' gruff farmer types and their pint sized companions. I'll bet nobody would be picking on them. Nothing funnier than some leather faced man saying, "don't ferget to put them bowz on that thar dawg o' mine."

I didn't realize Poodles were so discriminated against. I had a toy poodle when I was growing up, Schroder. I must have been very sheltered.

You did remind me, HF, I recently saw a large man walking a Yorkie down main street in a small town. At first I thought how silly he looked with such a small dog and then I thought how lucky the dog was to have an owner love him so much that he didn't think anything about how he looked walking a small dog.

Aww I think that's lovely :)

that's rediculous! i can't believe some people make judgements on others because of the dogs they keep.

i personally think guys who have little dogs are so cute! my fiance is probably the most intimidating person you would ever want to see. he's a big guy, covered in tattoos, and just generally has a tough guy air about him...but when he sees a dog (big, small, whatever) he will get down on the ground and do the whole "you're a cute doggie! yes you are! oh yes you are!" thing. it's adorable.

y'know another thought...the guy next door is mexican, very large and intimidating looking, with two sons who are both over 6 feet and also intimidating looking..... and has two chihauhau's....no one ever bothers him about them...(except me, when they wont stop yapping...)what is it about poodles? Do they have a show cut HF? I know some people think that cut is "feminine" looking, without realizing how strong and athletic these dogs really are......or the original purpose for the cut...although I still woulda said what you were thinking in that situation....

Actually, I don't care who points and laughs at the dogs. That's not what bugs me. I realize that Poodles aren't for everyone and can pretty much live with that. My problem is with the folks who ridicule the person on the other end of the leash. The dogs don't mind being laughed at. Heck, my husband didn't even seem to mind. It just gets on MY nerves, I reckon. We have one very sweet little school teacher/old maid looking lady (stereotype... think the image you get when you think of Old Mother Hubbard) that comes through our clinic with a Pit Bull named Snookie. Sure, it looks funny to me, but do I point and laugh and make fun of her? Noooo...

Actually, Perry was recently put into a show trim. Still, Pauly is still pretty short from being shaved down in January. My husband was walking Pauly, the nekkid dog, through the store. Also, Perry was nekkid when the guy told my husband that it looked gay. Some people are just morons. I don't care if they don't know the history, or think Poodles are the ugliest things on earth. To each's own, but some responses are downright offensive and uncalled for. I reckon it would be similar to me going up to someone with a Pit Bull and telling them how stupid they are for having something so dangerous (not that I believe that). We all know how Pit owners feel about that and I reckon I feel that way about breed stereotypes in general. Laugh at the dogs all you want, but don't harrass the person on the other end of the leash.

I agree with you 10000%. But as we all know, some people are just morons....I think poodles are neat dogs, although I have to admit I like the standards better than the toy's... but that's because I prefer big dogs...and although I dont care myself for the show cut, I'm not gonna laugh at someone who does like it...that's just plain rude.

It's not so much the discrimination against poodles (or any breed for that matter) that I'm amazed at but more the rudeness of some people.

Sure we all at times "think" unkind things about another person, I admit I do but I would NEVER EVER voice that thought.

I had a Standard Poodle a few years ago...there are "some" morons out there...my ex at that time wouldn't have any thing to do with her on walks..he was a closet poodle lover....he never came out with it in public
Some people do not realize that "some" of the trims on poodles were actually done for a reason; the dog had parts shaved down and the poofy parts left to protect vital organs when swimming in freezing waters....and to shave the other areas so the dog wouldn't be bogged down...people don't realized there was a reason for these trims when the dogs were actually working
I think also we learn from a young age to discriminate against poodles...remember cartoons when the local "french poodle" was the beauty queen which all the neighborhood dogs fell in love with...and the bad a$$ bulldogs were always falling in love...the bulldogs were considered the bad apples in the cartoons...so, I think that we are taught early in life to ridicule some dogs

I also just had to laugh when after I read this post...it reminds me of a police officer with the K9 unit who used to bring his wifes Standards Poodles in for clips. He would bring to dogs in his police car with his working K-9 dog...and sneak into the grooming shop (and he made it obvious that he was sneaking in  ) then he would have to come back and pick them up...he would ask my boss to check to be sure every thing was clear out side...and he had the dogs trained to lay down in the police car so no one would see him with the poodles  he was really hilarious...but, I suppose he contributed to the discrimination against poodles.

well, maybe not...here the K9 patrol vehicles are ONLY supposed to transport the canine dogs...so maybe he was sneaking them in because he wasnt supposed to be using his work vehicle for his wife's dogs...

where i work, there's a Yorkie who comes to board once in a while... and her owners are a bodybuilding couple. the husband's arms are so huge that when he carries the dog... you can barely see it!!!

Courtnek, I live in a pretty lax city in the martimes of Canada...believe me, he wouldn't have gotten in trouble for transporting the poodles
I know he and his wife fairly well...and he always made a point of making jokes about his wifes poodles. He never had a problem taking thier pitbull and Collie in the k-9 unit car.

Ya know, I dont "go for" a lot of breeds other than the APBT. BUT, there are some I like more than others. I dont like the smaller poodles but the standard ones are awesome dogs. I didnt ever have one but one of my friends when I was little did. He would follow us all over the place and wouldnt let anyone or anything near us. He was one of the best dogs I have ever been around.

Its people like that guy who shouldnt own pit bulls. Thinking they are tough because of the type of dog he has. Id like to meet him one day when Im walking a dog.... Show him what he really has.
I can just see him in the future letting that dog attack other dogs, cats, anything. Not caring what he is doing.
Its really sad for my breed how many of these ignorant jerks own them. They are making it really hard for those of us fighting BSL and tring to prove how great our dogs are with people.
And, letting the dog run around the place, freely? What the ....?

Funny how much more often currs are found in the human race than in the canine race.

Could you elaborate on this statement? How would you 'show him what he really has?'

I've stopped to think about what people think of me. I mean... I'm tiny and I'm fat... I have two small HAIRLESS dogs of wich one pulls like madman on walks and the other tries to run to every person walking by seeking attention.
In the beginning peoples jaws dropped and their eyes got all big. Especially the ones I knew. They had this "she has a... DOG?!?!" look on their faces. (at that time I had only Ben.) I mean... I have SEVERE allergies and SEVERE asthma. I can't go anywhere without my medicines and eatin lets say nuts or beeing on a farm is as life threatening to me as having someone choke me to death. So sure they were surprised to see me walking a DOG at the age of 16.
Then the word got around (I live in a very small town) and peoples faces started to lit up every time they saw me walking with Ben and I felt proud. I could hear everyone whispering: "Look at that gorgeous dog!!" or people would walk up to me and ask questions of him and pet him. And people started to become really facinated about the fact that I'm this allergic and I do have a dog.
But then there were those people who thought I was mad. And when I started planning on a second hairless dog (Bella) they thought I should be locked in a mental institution.
Then I got Bella and I started to get the same reaction as I got with Ben. But now it's devided in half. One half LOVES both Ben and Bella and think it's amazing that I've got TWO dogs even though the doctors told me I could never EVER own a dog.
The other half again... well... Let's put it this way... I talked to a relative on the phone and he told me to ship Ben and Bella to China because that's all they're good for.
Guess if that hurt my feelings.

Now I'm just tired of the whole thing. The next time I heard this "shipping to China" -thing I told him I would NEVER part from my dogs and I haven't. I've not slept a night away from either of my dogs since I got Ben. Ben's now 2 years and 8 months. Bella is 8 months.

So... If people point at me or my dogs and laugh or tell comments like "he/she looks like a hyena", "he/she is an overgrown rat" or if someone straight out says that I abuse my dogs because I keep them in this cold weather... I just don't care. All I care about is how I feel about my dogs. I mean... they are MY dogs not anybody elses. And that's exacly the way I want it and I wouldn't have it any other way.

hummmm didnt you say you match your dogs in a differnt post??? maybe he was going to show him that he has a cur bred pit bull and his game bread dog will kick his dogs butt.

I didnt even think of that one statement sounding the way it did....
I would never allow my dog to attack someones dog just because the guy thinks his dog is badass. I will not lose a dog over something so ignorant. They mean a lot more to me than that...

Hmmmm means show him what he really has, all he (the poser) really has is a penis extention..as a pose to a proper APBT...at a decent weight and well bred..not one of these monster pits that the "genitally lacking" seem to prefer for some reason...
Exactly what I meant. And I'll give him a little education to go with it.

Are you gonna say this every time I post? Its not the first time you have. Will it be the last? Everyone here knows what I do. What do you think is going to come out of you continually bringing it up? If you have a question or just want to btch me out, IM me.
