Hi everybody its nice to know there are sites like this that can give you some inside to someone who has never had a house dog. Well here it is i have a 6 month old male Chihuahua and we crate trained him. When we get home we take him out and let him run around the house. He occasionally urinates and poops around the house without warning how can i train him so that he lets me know when he needs to go out or what are the signs. Another thing is he likes to wake me up at 5:00 am everyday with his wining is that just because he cant hold it because thats a little early for me.... Does that change with age??? And sorry but one more thing is it possible to spoil the dog to the point where i cant get him to listen when i call him and need to learn to acquire a tone so that he knows when i mean business... help.....

First of all, do you let him outside to do his businness right when you let him out of the crate? Because you should be doing that.

If he's sniffing around that's usually a sign he's looking for a place to go. When he does have accidents, clean it with a good enzyme cleaner (right guys? I'm not sure how well I'm giving advice here  ) which will get rid of the smell so HE can't smell it. If he can still smell it he's more likely to go in that spot again.
Take him out as often as possible. Take him out after sleeping, playing, eating, whatever! As soon as he's not doing something he's most likely going to remember he has to go pee. Don't give him the chance to go in the house basiclly... I'm sure someone else can explain it a lot better then I can, because I can't even remember how I house trained Coal :o I think I blocked all that out

It will change with age, as he gets older he will be able to hold it all night. But he's still little with a small blatter that he can't hold very well because he's still just a puppy. If he's waking you up to go then that's a GOOD THING! Rather then just sneaking off to go in the house while your sleeping, deffently take him out. I know it's hard, Make sure when you take him out no matter how sleepy you are praise LOTS when he does it outside!

Oh deffently! You have to lay down the rules, Come means come no matter what. Don't let him get away with not listening! And don't spoil him to that point anyway! I don't mean don't spoil your dog, mine's spoiled deffently, but don't spoil him HORRIBLY where he gets away with murder and has no boundries! A dog with rules is a well behaved and happy dog! :D I advise in investing in some really good training books, and possibly if there is any classes that are available to you, get him into some obediance classes too! It not only helps you learn what to do, but also socializes your pup with other dogs and puppies, and people!!

Good luck, and I'm sure someone else on here can explain things better then I

Thanks for the advice. Its just so hard they are so damn cute.... i was thinking of going to the obedience classes they offer them at Petco and i think i might just do that... because as far as taking him out i take him out right when i get him out of the crate and after he eats and while he is playing i will distract him and take him out... but he still manages to have something else to do in the house it so nerve racking.... and i cant tell when he needs to go because he spends his whole time on the floor sniffing around so i can never tell .... he sniffs everything i should of called him nosey....

a good way to get him to tell you when he wants to go out is this:

everytime you bring him out to do his business, make him sit in front of the door first. it takes some time, but eventually he will associate sitting in front of the door with having to go potty. soon, whenever he needs to go, you'll find him staring at the door. haha

As for his size does anybody have anymore input he is awefully small still and is already 6 months old i am wondering if he will stay this size??? He is about 3lbs i think something like that i took him to the vet for his last shot about a month ago and he was 2lbs...

First of all, get a clicker.

Stay with him outside. When he does his business, click and reward immediately. Keep doing this for a few weeks and he'll quickly learn that going outside is a good thing.

Second of all, at that age, perhaps having the run of the house isn't such a great idea. You might want to confine him to an area where accidents aren't such a big deal and easy to clean up, like the kitchen. As he gets older and he gets better control, you can open up the rest of the house.

Thirdly, going to the washroom in the house should be a negative experience. If you catch him, grab him with a very stern and loud "No!" and take him outside. Confining him helps because its important that you catch him in the act. If he's off in another room and is unsupervised, you're not going to catch him.

Finally, let him out often. He's still quite young and its alot to ask for him to hold it for 8 hrs.

I had a Chi cross when I was about 7, so it was a while ago... but she grew to be about 7lbs, so seeing has he's half a year, sounds like he's about half the weight  He will not stay that small, he still has 6 more months to grow! :D
