I thought for sure you were going to say "Humanely Euthanized," too...

I hate that term. I wish they'd just say Put to Sleep or Euthanized. I'm not sure what it is that bothers me, it just does.

I like watching those shows because they usually have happy endings, and those are a great payoff.

You hear "humanely euthanized" most on Animal Cops Detroit because they "humanely euthanize" all pits and pit mixes that they come across, and there's usually at least one per show :(

"euthanasia" is a politically correct way of saying "put to death".

they cant say "put to sleep"...I remember when I was a child "put to sleep" was common...it upsets some children and makes them not want to sleep. They dont understand the distinction. The shows put all the warnings up about graphic nature, but people still let their kids watch...

"Humanely euthanized" is the now term. ther are INhumane ways to euthanize, and thats how that came about. People have thrown cats into rivers to drown...that;s "euthanasia" too, because put to death is put to death. I call it animal abuse, but y'know, I'm NOT politically correct...

I dont object to humane euthanasia...like Animla Cops, they have laws they have to follow...I disagree with their Pit policy, but they are covering
their butts..and they have to. They cant afford to be sued and they are doing the best they can for the most amounts of animals possible. The ASPCA in Michigan didnt make that decision about the Pit's, it was made for them in the courts.

I DO object to "imbedded collar" - did you not notice the dog was GROWING???? They DONT stay puppies forever???
I have NO sympathy for people like that!!! I think they should take
them at size 14 and make them squeeze into size 8 pants, and wear them for MONTHS....Do YOU like the way that feels?????

I understand why they say "humanely euthanize," I just can't stand the term.

The Michigan Humane Society (which consists of 3 shelters in Detroit, and does not govern all Humane Societies in Michigan) does not adopt out pit bulls because of extremely high rates of dogfighting, and any pit bull put up for adoption is at high risk to be "adopted" to a bad person wanting them for the wrong reasons. There may be liability issues as well, I don't know, but I do know what a horrible rate of dogfighting there is in that city, as well as other "big" cities in the state, including my own.

This weekend, 11 pit bulls were seized from a home in Flint because of dogfighting. Some are puppies, but all will almost certainly be euthanized because the Genesee County Animal Control (where the dogs are being held) does not adopt out pit bulls for the same reason: dogfighting.

However, in the same city (Flint) is the Genesee County Humane Society, and they DO adopt out pit bulls. I once met a couple who'd just adopted a beautiful chocolate APBT from there, and they had it at the store with them, picking out a collar and stuff. Very sweet.

I do have issues with the MHS policy regarding pits and pit mixes, but I would rather see the dog Humanely Euthanized than being used as bait until it died a horrible death. On a side note, I once saw an episode where they did place a litter of pit mixes with a rescue which had, to paraphrase their explanation, "better resources to give them the attention that they need, something the MHS is unable to provide with the number of animals it deals with."

I do like Animal Precinct they really work hard to give any dog a shot, Animal Cops is not as good but Animal Cops Houstan is pretty good though. Animal Cops Miami is the worst - they do feild euthanasia on inured animals without tags or chips, in fact a don't recall to many good endings at all, plus their commentating sucks.

why do you object to "temperament test"? I feel that all shelter/rescue dogs need to be tested for temperament...how else could you adopt them out to the mostly CLUELESS people wanting dogs? WE know our dogs...we take the time to learn about them, their characteristics, their faults, and work with it. I have been rescueing a long time. Most people DONT..the dog is cute, they take it...so when it bites the kid, that makes the rescue center, Humane Society, ASPCA, liable..

please explain your objection...

My objection to the temperament test is not so much the need for a test in and of itself, but Assess-a-Pet in particular, which is used widely by the ASPCA. A test that is arbitrary at best, dangerous at it's worst.
Believe me, as a trainer who specializes in aggression cases, and does Siberian rescue, testing is imperative for dogs needing adoption, and it's not something I take lightly.

Mine is "probation" and "fine". :x When these horrible people who abuse animals ONLY get a fine of a few hundred dollars or a few months probation. Nothing on the show(s) realy upsets me or makes me sad, it makes me angry more then anything.

I love Animal Presinct, that is realy the only one I like. But i do realy realy hate Animal Cops Miami....oh they are NOT cops they don't even work for the humane society. They are animal control officers. Did anyone see the episode with the two Rotties that were trained to be guard dogs? The one Rottie bit the AC officer TWICE! But they decided to try and rehabilitate the dog. I have NOTHING against rehablitating dogs at all but this dog bit someone twice so hard that there was blood. This dog was trained to bite. I just think that the dog should have been put down . It seems like it would be a danger to society to put that dog back out on the streets. JMHO.

ANd has anyone seen the opening credits to Miami animal cops? Where some guy got a leash around a dog as the dog was running and the AC officer pulled so hard on the leash while the dog was running that the dog flew backwards in the air? God I just hate that show!

I like all the animal cop shows except the Miami one. That guy who catches the alligators drives me up a wall! He has no people skills at all. Did you see the one where the homeless people were feeding an alligator and he was trying to catch it? They were a little upset about it so he overreacted and called the cops. He didn't even try to talk rationally to them. Other than that guy, I think the Miami one is ok, but it seems like everytime its on, I see him.

In some ways, the worst shows are the ones where the owner complies just enough that they can't take the dog away.

One in particular comes to mind. It was this beautiful GSD in a junk yard. He was so friendly, and you could tell he was a real charater. As soon as people approached the fence he'd come running up to see them, pick up his food bowl and run around.

The Humane Society forced to owner to clear a path for the dog so he could run, which the owner did, but beyond that there was nothing they could do. He was well fed, had shelter, and adequate place to roam.

But this poor dog spends his days and nights all by himself in this junkyard, as a deterent. You could tell the officers were frustrated they couldn't do more, and one of them actually said "All dogs belong in a home" and that she wished there was something they could do.

mines is pit bull...
at least when it comes to that show because it is always followed by:
dog fighting, humanely euthanized, tempemnt tested, emacciated, or abandoned.

I cannot stand any of the Animal Cops shows, but Animal Precinct is usually pretty good. :)
I haven't seen any episodes of Animal Cops Miami, and from the sounds of it I don't want to. :o :-?

I have the same question for Loki as Court does...

As for the shows... I don't really watch TV that much, but I have caught a few of them. Not sure which ones, haven't really paid enough attention and watch them enough to know, but the ones I have seen always leave me in tears, but I don't know if it's morbid fassination, or just BEGGING for a happy ending, if I see it on I just hAVE to watch it... but since I don't watch TV much, that's pretty rare :-?

[quote name='SexxieRacerChik']Most of the pits I've seen them say they were going to "Humanely Enuthanize" were the ones they had confiscated for dog fighting. Those dogs are not good to adopt out because they are conditioned to fighting other dogs. Kinda hard to adopt a dog that people can't take anywhere without having to muzzle it and such.

Michigan is the dog fighting capitol of the US..what better place to go find you a good fighting/bait dog then a pound that sells rehibilitated fighting dogs? :-?

The Michigan Humane Society (Animal Cops Detroit) euthanizes EVERY unclaimed pit bull or pit bull mix that comes into the shelter - not just fighting dogs, and not just dogs/puppies confinscated from a dogfighter. It can be the friendliest, sweetest dog, but if it's a stray, or it's been abused, then it WILL be PTS. (There is the legal period where the owner is able to claim the dog if they can prove ownership)

The only exception I've seen has been the litter of puppies I mentioned previously. And once, they found two dogs left in an abandonned apartment. One was a pit bull, and the other looked to be a pit/lab mix. They collected both dogs, and the narrator said that the pit bull would be "humanely euthanized," but agent who collected the mix called it a Lab Mix - I think in an effort to save its life.

Eric - I remember the episode of Animal Precinct with the junkyard GSD. That was a sweet dog, I wanted to rescue him from that place.

On a side note, I am SO GLAD that I'm not the only one who hates the Miami one!!! I've only seen a couple episodes, but it seemed like everything they did was backwards. Don't like it at all.

I do love Animal Precinct because it's a very Pit Bull-friendly show. They'll try their best to rehabilitate each and every dog, even the fighting ones, and place them in good hands.
