Yipee! It's not as bad as we thought!

We took Bentley to the specialist this morning and all I can say is how relieved I am. Turns out the source of his pain and yipping ISN'T his hips! He does have looseness in the hips but from the x-ray the doc couldn't really tell for sure if he has HD. He may still have it. But, we did find the source of his yelping and limp leg. Turns our he has patella luxation (sp?) in both hind legs. For those of you that don't know (I certainly didn't) that's when the kneecap (patella) doesn't always stay in the groove where it's supposed to be. And when it pops of where it should be it causes pain and the lameness. There is a surgery to correct it but the vet said that he wouldn't have to have it right away. It isn't an emergency. There's time to save up and really he won't be in constant paiin. That's what I was most afraid of. I was scared that he would be in pain all the time and I couldn't do anything to help him. The surgery is much less expensive (around $1,100 per knee) and can only be done one at a time. I am so relieved! He can continue to play and run and all that stuff. So, we're going to start saving the money up to get the surgery. The right leg is worse than the left. :D :D :D :D

Bentley I feel your pain! :D My own knees do that too, with the right being the worst with a torn posterior ligament, after I came a cropper at an agility show :P Keep him supple, but not bounding exercise and get him on vitamin E along with a good joint supplement

Thanks Racer. I know that you can take out insurance on your pets, but I never saw the need. Plus now that he's already been diagnosed with it if it's anything like people insurance they won't pay a dime out on treatment. Besides, we're always able to manage to find the money. Worse comes to worse and he has to have the surgery and we can't afford it we'll sell off some stock and take a loss on it. I'm seriously considering it for Roxie though, because she's also a Saint and I've seen how expensive that can be with Bentley!

Very glad to hear the diagnosis is not as bad as was feared. Please remind me, how old is Bentley? SOME dogs outgrow the luxating patella problem, Jesse BSD had just a few occurrences of this as a pup. It was only in one leg and thankfully was not an issue as he matured.
My sisters Chi/Corgi mix has occaisional trouble with this and my brothers Chihuahua will now and then hold a leg up and hop around a bit.

Thanks everyone! Carol, Bentley is only 14 months old. Still just a puppy really. And he certainly acts like it! :D
