Guest Anonymous Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 Okay, let me lay down the background facts on what has happened. On Sat. Bentley (St. Bernard) was getting on the couch. He was streching his back and his back legs were splayed out behing him on the floor (front legs on the couch). All of a sudden he let out this horrifying (sp?) yelp. He got down and started to walk towards me. His right rear leg was just dragging along the floor, like he had no control over it. I was terrified. My husband had my car which is the only way I can transport him. So, I waited it out a while. After a little while he started to use the leg again. So we decided that maybe he just pinched something, because he was acting normally. Yesterday when I got home from picking up my daughter and took the dogs outside he yelped again. This time I didn't see what happened because he was behind me. I called my vet and she said to bring him in. So, I did. He let her move his leg and hip around without any complaint. She also palpatated (her word) his abdomen. She took him outside to walk him around and see if he was limping. Also did a fecal exam. She said that she didn't think that it was a hip, knee or leg problem. There was an excess of bacteria in his feces. She thought it might be a stomach problem or a problem with his spine. Since anything with Bentley is a huge undertaking (he's 140lbs.) she wanted us to go home and give it five days. He's on a medicine for the bacteria. He also has to take aspirin twice a day. If he's still walking oddly on Mon. we're supposed to take him in for a serires of x-rays. He would have to be put under in order to do it which is why she wanted to wait and see if he had just twisted or pulled something in his back while playing. I'm also supposed to keep him from playing for five days. I'm so scared. I wanted to go in yesterday have my vet tell me what was wrong and what we could do about it. I feel like a bad mom. I wish I had taken him to the emergency vet Sat. Every couple of hours I start crying again. My husband keeps telling me not to worry. And I'm trying. Sorry this post is so long and rambling I'm just really uspet and needed to get it out to someone other than my hubby (not that he hasn't been great). Please send good thoughts Bentley's way. We could both use them. Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 Awww, poor Bentley! I'll be sending thoughts and prayers your way! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 Thanks you guys. I'm worried because he's not walking correctly maybe I didn't put that in. I'm a little scatter-brained today. He's walking with his hips tucked forward. That's why the vet thought maybe a tummy problem because it would be like when a human doubles over when their stomach hurts. I'm trying really hard not to worry. I'm fine most of the time, just sometimes it hits me like a tidal wave and I well up all over again. I know Bentley is upset with me because I won't let him play with the other dogs and keep having to tell him no but I certainly can't see keeping him crated all day. He'll just have to me mad at me! :D Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 That's certainly possible. He's been a little off since we brought her home. He has to share his water bowl. But I've tried to be very careful about making sure his still gets lots of "alone" time with me. That he doesn't get ignored. I guess I just have to wait it out the five days and go from there. Quote
drjeffrock Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 My prayers are w/ Benson. I hope it is nothing serious. Quote
Malamum Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 Firstly you are NOT a bad Mum at all. If your vet can't notice anything obviously wrong then the emergecy vet on Saturday wouldn't have been able to either. I know it's impossible not to worry but try to make the 5 days as stress free for both Bently and yourself as possible. Sending lots of positive thoughts.... Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 Thanks everyone. He's just making me feel so bad with those eyes of his. Seems like he's saying "Mom why won't you let me play? I wanna play!" I know it's no fun for him but you gotta do what you gotta do as my mom used to tell me! At least he isn't acting like he's in pain which comforts me a little anyway! :D Quote
imported_Kat Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 Aww Give Bentley a big hug  Quote
