Hello, Sorry to hear that your pooch needs surgery. You can try posting on the akita messageboard I frequent, www.akitaforum.com
There are quite a few members on that board that have gone through both the tplo and the other surgery. I am sure everyone would be happy to give you more info and possibly a referal in your area. Good luck!

I have a 150 lb Newfoundland which is recooperating from cruciate ligament surgery...he is recovering wonderfully. The breeder took arranged to have the surgery done and paid for it so I'm not sure of which method they used. The most important issue is the care the dog receives while he is recovering. I had to leave my Newfoundland dog with the breeder where she kept him in a run with rubber matting underneath so he wouldn't slip, she also put a top on the kennel so he couldn't jump up...this is very important...don't let your dog jump after the surgery (or before for that matter) It has been 6 months since the surgery and he is putting full body weight on that leg now...he is taken for leash walks only until he builds up the muscles in that leg..then, he'll be back to his old self. He is the second Newfoundland which I have owned which has gone through the surgery...each one was operated on by differnt vets at different hospitals...I have no complaints about either. My other Newf. which is 9 years old now is doing wonderful she stayed with me after the surgery as she is not hyper like my younger boy who was just operated on, I was careful about her exerise as well after the surgery and slowly built that leg back up ...I have both dogs on Glucosamine & Chondroitin, vitamin C, MSM, and yucca root as an anti inflammatory. The chances of arthritis building up after the surgery is very high....you'd never know it with my old girl...she acts just like a pup and has never had a lame day since the surgery...my boy is the same.

Thank you for the Akita website. I added a message to their forum. What I am most concerned with is the vet I am taking my dog to. I am actually verey familiar with the surgery - metal plate - and I do know a specialist in Houston. BUT I heard of Dr Hulse and he would be a lot closer. I just need some info on him and the dogs he had operated on. Is there a website that gives info like that??? Thanks

I am not sure, but I would assume there is some type of governing body for vets with regards to surgery and their credentials. From what I have noticed, one of the most important and overlooked area of ACL surgery is the rehabiliation AFTER the surgery. It is not uncommon for dogs to tear their ACL in their other legs while recovering. In fact, someone on the akita forum recently had a ACL surgery done, and during the first few weeks of recovery, the akita slipped out of its collar, got excited and hopped around, and tore another ACL. I am sure people will post up with much useful info.

I have a Boxer that had to have both knees done. She tore one knee and nobody knew what she did. By the time I found out that she had a cruciate tear she tore her other knee. By the way. Great looking dogs. My friend has a Pit looking just like yours. She is a sweatheart.

Just want to wish you luck with the surgery.

My Rottweiler has had both knees done...TPLO but since I am in Australia I can't give you any info on your surgeon. I do know they have to be licensed to do TPLO though.
