Guest Anonymous Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 Getting a new puppy (bitch) this week but i already have two older dogs bitch and a male. I am going to keep them separated for a large portion of the time in order to get her more interested in me that the other dogs which is a problem that i had with my second dog despite them sleeping separatley for 3 months. the thing is my oldest bitch is very motherly and when i got my 2nd dog she allowed him to suckle from her despite her being spayed etc! Now he adores her and rates her over me. Anyway the querie was do you reckon that you can keep a puppy on the same property as the other dogs and not let them see her or that by the time they do get introduced they would resent her. my boy is very boisterous and i would want her scared the first day by meeting him bounding around even if on neutral ground. any thoughts?! Black GSD Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 There is no reason not to let the pup see the older dogs. It is also a good idea to let them spend some time together. (Supervised of course and one at a time. ) I would NOT let the pup suck on the "motherly one". I would NOT correct the female OR the pup though if the pup tries to suck on her. Correcting the pup could cause the pup to be afraid of her, correcting the adult could make her resent/dislike the pup because she would see it as the pup is causing her to be corrected. I would just distract the pup if she tries it. Seeing the other dogs and having limited amounts of time to socialize with and/or play with them will NOT cause the pup to be "doggy"(like dogs better than people). Not letting them have any contact with the pup could VERY well lead the pup to either be aggressive towards them OR to be afraid of them later on. What kind of dogs are they? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 18, 2004 Posted February 18, 2004 they are retrievers i've decieded against keeping them separate completly for a couple of days but wil introduce them on neutral ground separately cos i dont want my two ganging up on her. i would never punish either pup or my elder dog for suckling it always works best to let them sort it out on their own as i know that mine would never hurt a puppy sayin that i wil be supervising because my boy is boistrous and could easily knock a pup over :o apologies for poor spelling Quote
