stiff Posted February 13, 2004 Posted February 13, 2004 OK, so I'm thinking about building a big dog food container made out of wood, so I can store a whole week's worth of food in it rather than in the big bag, it would have a door on top of it, Do any of you have such a thing or have any suggestions? drjeffrock Posted February 13, 2004 Posted February 13, 2004 I have been thinking about doing something similar myself. I guess the wood would be ok if the food was being used within a week. In my case, I have decided to go with a plastic air tight container, so the food doesnt go stale. It takes my dogs 3 weeks or so to go through a 33 lb. bag. Quote
stiff Posted February 13, 2004 Author Posted February 13, 2004 yes I have been thinking about the food going stale but it will only be there a week, and right now I go thru lots of things to keep the bag out of the reach of my dogs (like hanging it up high), so I will do something else to try and keep it fresh. StarFox Posted February 13, 2004 Posted February 13, 2004 I use thoes huge 5 gallon buckets that your suppose to use for paint to store the dog food. It works great, it's airtight and can fit about 25 lbs in each. And they stack. Best 5 dollars I ever spent! Quote
imported_Cassie Posted February 13, 2004 Posted February 13, 2004 I used to keep mine in an air tight container as well...but, now I put enough food in a baggy for an indivudual serving...put each dogs name on the baggy so I don't get confused... and put them in the deep freeze. I worry about the food going rancid. Quote
Pokey318 Posted February 13, 2004 Posted February 13, 2004 Starfox- I like to paint bucket idea. I'm sure they are much cheaper than what is sold at the pet stores. Thanks for the hint. I'm going to Home Depot today to get one. Quote
DogPaddle Posted February 14, 2004 Posted February 14, 2004 You could go with an olive barrel. They come in many sizes some of them very large, I have seen one that was likely over 50L. They are plastic and air tight and have a lid you can either clamp on (clamp comes with it) or just put on and take off. Canoeists get harnesses for them so they can take them tripping, keeps food smells from attracting animals and is watertight. Here is one with the harness already on it: http://www.myccr.com/SectionGear/ReviewPics/HeadstrongHarness_LG.jpg Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 Hello Stiff nice to see you passing by, I would use a plastic air-tight container Quote
xavierandrea Posted February 25, 2004 Posted February 25, 2004 I have 3 dogs so I go through alot of food. At home we use a rubber garbage can with a lit. It works great. I look at it as a oversize tuperware. Quote
imported_Kat Posted February 25, 2004 Posted February 25, 2004 I use a big very bright pink Eukanuba bin that I nabbed from one of the reps when he came to our surgery! Quote
