Will consider the Brittany, must admit that I have not heard about them before but they sound as if they would make a good choice.
Would appreciate a little info on the welsh spaniels if anyone out there can help....

I've never met a Welsh Springer Spaniel so I have no personal experience with them. It does say that they tend to be a bit reserved with strangers but I would think that with proper socialization it would be fine.
