Guest Anonymous Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 Your post about your Dad winning the Lassie contest brought back some sad memories. I was born in 1948 and also entered a contest to win a puppy. I think it must have been about 1958, maybe the same contest. I wanted a collie so bad. When the winners were announced on tv - as I recall it was on the Disney Show - I didn't win and I ran to my bedroom and cried. So it was your Dad that beat me out, lol. Did he get the puppy? I would like to hear about his collie dog. The Lassie tv show started in 1954. In 1957 Timmy became Lassie's owner. The show was still on in 1964. Another interesting fact from those years. I was trying to save my allowance, 25 cents a week, to buy a collie. Sears Roebuck sold dogs through the catalog if you can beleive it. A collie was $50. About a year later, I got my first dog. Not a collie, he looked more like Old Yeller but I loved him dearly. Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 that is sad...I also grew up watching Lassie a big part of my childhood My friend had a B/C called lassie she was a beauitful girl Quote
MajiesMom Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 He got a male puppy and named him Laddie. Whe n I was young every time I stayed over at my grandmother Quote
courtnek Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 I too grew up on Lassie...and even as a kid, always wondered "how the hell does Timmy get in so much trouble...good thing he has this dog!!" My parents were overprotective, and wouldnt think of a dog until I was 13 and we finally got a big enough house. My first was a Golden... I thought the fact that your dad named him Laddie was cute, and appropriate. Altho Lassie was supposed to be a female, all the Lassie dogs were male... :D Quote

Altho Lassie was supposed to be a female, all the Lassie dogs were male... I remember one story from some of the documentaries I'd watch... One season, Lassie was shedding horribly, losing hair in patches... and it became very obvious that Lassie was a male... so they made up some kind of, umm... weave? toupe? to cover him up :) It's kind of funny, with the help of Nicklelodeon, my Dad and I grew up on the same show :) One day I'll have myself a nice big lassie dog!
