I did not know this...others may...but, I thought I would share it any way... :fadein:
Did you know? In 1941, a Collie named "Pal" was sold by his owner because he was too active. The dog's new owner took him to a movie audition and Pal, who had been bought for $5.00, became the start of "Lassie Come Home". He acquired a huge salary, his own apartment and a contract that limited his work to seven hours a day with short weeks. I'll bet "Pal's" previous owners were kicking them selves!

I found this to be quite interesting as well....the Newfoundland dog was orginally called the "Greater Newfoundland" and the Labrador Retriever was formely called the "Lesser Newfoundland" the Labrador had also been called the "St. John's Dog" as well.

I saw that show on Animal Planet tonight too! It was really interesting! I didn't know the differences between the English and American collie.

Maybe I should start telling people that Buck is a lesser newfoundland mix! It would make him seem more fancy

That's cool! Aww why was the Lab called the Lesser Newfoundland? Don't tell Magic but they are tied for my favorite breed with the GSD.
I remember reading something that said the dog that starred in "Old Yeller" was adopted from a shelter for only $5!!!!!
When my dad was young I think 6 or 7 or 8 oh I don't remember he entered a contest that was run across Canada and the U.S. It was for writing a jingle for Nestle Quick I believe. The prize was one of Lassie's puppies and a trip the the Disney Land in California. My dad along with two other kids won. I wonder what Lassie it was because he was born in 51 and it was in the late 50's he won the pup. The story he told me and the newspaper clippings my grandmother kept for all this time say's it was the Original Lassie??? Does anyone know when the series (I think there was a series - I don't know I wasn't born yet!) was out, what years?

 I am so jealous, I don't get Animal Planet.
What's the difference between the English and American Collies? Please tell me I didn't see the show.
I have a good idea, we should have a topic so that people who get Animal Planet can tell the people that don't get it all about the shows and all the interesting stuff they learned. LOL seriously.... :D

I knew about Pal/Lassie, but I've always been a major Lassie freak and know a ton of stuff that will never come in useful about them :)

The UKC and AKC have slightly different standards for the collie - the English collie is a couple inches taller and I believe has a slightly wider head shape among other things. They're closer to the old fashioned collies like Pal, but any registered show collie now is quite a bit smaller and more streamlined than the farm collies that used to be... there are some breeders who specialize in "old fashioned" collies still. When I was little my "boyfriend" had a great big ol' collie dog I loved... I think that's why I "dated" the boy in the first place ;)

The Original Lassie was Pal, who Cassie talked about. Lassie Come Home came out in 1943, so if Pal - who was an adult in 1941 for the taping - sired a litter of puppies in the late 50s, he was one old daddy. The original Lassie series, which was actually called "Jeff's Collie," came out in 1954, so maybe it was that dog's puppy?

MajiesMom, thats pretty cool about your dad winning that prize.
I don't get animal planet either...I just happened to be leafing through one of my Dogs in Canada magazines...in the breed directory they have all kinds of little dog facts...

I suppose where both breeds orginated in Newfoundland, Canada...they called the bigger dog the greater and the smaller the lesser.
have you ever met a person from Newfoundland, Canada??? they are a breed all of their own...very unusual people. I don't live very far from Newfoundland and I have been there a few times...the people are very laid back and talk very differently... when you take the ferry over to Newfoundland most times you get screeched in, this is where you have to have a drink of their very disgusting hard liquor and then you have to kiss a cod...they are very different!
In the case of the Lab...with the Lab the other name St. John's dog...St. John's is a city in Newfoundland...I guess they thought the region of Labrador, Newfoundland was a better name.

ooh I love watching Lassie. I think actually Lassie was what started my love for dogs. I always was up on a sunday morning to watch her on bbc2 when I was a wee nipper :P

On the Collie subject you Americans say Collie and I immediately think Border Collie. Over here when we say Collie we mean a Border, and say Rough collie for a "lassie type collie". I like roughs too and have seen a few doing agility very gracefully, and one doing obedience, but what work there would be in that coat!

What do you call the smooth coated variety of Collie's?

The coat does require alot of care...we have alot of Shelties and Collies (rough) come in for grooming...you wouldn't believe the amount of poop you find clining to these dogs pants! :o I can't believe owners don't check their long coated dogs for dirty bottoms...its pretty gross. :o

Lab's are actually a mix between the original Newfie (Greater) and another water dog, believed to have been imported from Labrador. The fishermen wanted a smaller, kighter dog to haul nets to hsore and then swim back out to the boats.

I beleive they were called "Lesser" because they are a spin off of the Newfie, but much smaller.
