Arg! Zebra is driving everyone crazy! For the last month or so every night zebra is just the most annoying dog in the world! He makes all kinds of noise, he growels, whines, and wookie talks not stop. At first I thought it was because he wanted to be pet..but no, he still makes noise when I pet him. We try to ignore it but then he starts to bark very loud. The only thing that shuts him up is his kong but that only last for a few mins. This behaviour only starts at 10:00 pm or later. My mom is getting seriously angry and keeps yelling at me to make him stop but I don't know how! He also gets realy hyper at night and it's not like he dosn't get enough exersize, he runs and plays outside for more than an hour a day and gets walks! And we play with him when he is inside. SO what is his deal? Please please please someone tell me how to keep him quiet. I'm going insane with his constant wining. :drinking:

maybe you can calm him down some with rescue remedy? it's a calming flower essence and you can find it at many health stores.

otherwise i can only say don't fall for his attempts to get your attention that way, or he will never stop. ignore him when he is whining (i know, that's easy to say when a dog drives you nuts :() and praise him when he is quiet and he will learn what's expected of him. this is the same drill as with a new puppy you want to get used to nicely sleep in a crate at night.

he may get enough physical exercise throughout the day, but mental exercise (obedience, teaching him to do tricks, etc.) takes much more energy out of a dog than walks and play time, and he might be a lot more tired and willing to behave if you do a good training session with him in the evening.

good luck!

As long as you know that he doesn't need to go to the bathroom or anything else, I would say to ignore him when he starts doing this. He will up the ante and it'll get worse before it gets better, but you can't reward that behavior.

Does Zebra do anything else during this time: lick self alot, drag but on ground, chew paws, avoid a certain area of the house . . . ?
Does anything change in the house during this time: timed electrical device come on, person who is typically not around show up - especially if they wear strong colognes, everyone all together, tv on, paticular show . . . ?

Good questions DP....also, what happens at 10:00? is this normally bedtime for everyone? or is there a certain show you watch at that time every night? The reason I ask is that some opening musical themes make some dogs crazy. My Malamute used to howl when the Empire Carpet commercials came on, something about the jingle annoyed him and made him howl...we got to changing the channel as soon as one would start.
So maybe something on the TV or radio is annoying him...or maybe he knows everyone is going to bed and he's trying to prevent it, in which case some crate retraining and ignoring may be necessary....

Maybe it's because around 10 everyone starts setteling down. My dad is usually in bed by then. My mom usually starts to relax and turns allot of the lights off in the house. And I'm usually on the computer. Maybe it's that? He does sleep in his crate at night but he HATES it! I have to practicly chace him into it.

DP- He never use to sleep in a crate or anything. In fact we never had one. But then with his hip operation he needed to be crated 24/7. Then he only had to be crated at night and when we left the house. Now he don't need to be crated at all but I find it better then him sleeping under the kitchen table because his crate is allot warmer and I can keep an eye on him. His crate is in my room right next to my bed.

I would try leaving him out of it since you know he doesn't like it. Does it get really cold in your house? Maybe give him a few blankets or keep him in your room but out of the crate.
