Have you ever heard of a Bullnese? Probably not because it is another designer breed developed by someone in Florida. (I'm beginning to think that Florida is the puppy mill capitol of the world) Here are some pics and the "breed" standard.

It is a cross between a french bulldog and a pekinese.

Is it me or does this one look a lot like a pug?

I don't think we should be developing any new breeds until the current dog overpopulation problem is under control.

What's wrong with owning a French Bulldog or a Pekingnese? Why would someone want to have them all mixed up together? :-?

Besides, both of those breeds have problems giving birth due to head size. It seems that the last thing one would want to do is to create a breed that automatically would have problems.

Thats what I'm thinkin :-?

What would make you say that they Are being bred in a puppy mill. They could be bred in the perfect enviroment. They might actually not be trying to make money off the pups. I have been to the pound, I would not want to own many of those dogs.
There are a lot children that need adopting, So should people stop having babies untill all the children in the world have been adopted!
No, you want your own People have a right to have a certain type of dog also. I agree we have a problem with over population but stop burning every breeder you know nothing about for this problem.

I don't remember saying that these dogs were bred in a puppy mill. I said that Florida has a lot of puppy mills. But I think it's possible since puppy mills often market these designer mixed breed dogs.

In theory I have no problem with developing new breeds of dogs. But the dog population problem is way out of control. I think we should be more concerned with that than making up new breeds of dogs.

Out of curiousity, why not? What would make you want them?

Many of them are older dogs with temperment or other problems. I have three friends that have adopted from the shelter and 2 out of the three are nervous and unsociable animals. They really get no enjoyment from the dogs.
It is very unfortunate, But non the less TRUE.

Gee that's funny, ALL of my friend's have shelter dogs, and none of them are "nervous" or "unsociable".

Think about why they are in the shelter in the first place. The world is over-populated with all breeds of dogs, so why experiment in making cross breeds which are subject to so many adverse problems and bring more dogs into the world? These designer dogs are effectively mutts and it would take a lot more selective breeding over hundreds of years to get a so called true line. There are more than 800 recognised breeds in the world as it is. Leave it at that.

In my experience with shelter dogs, most are under 2 years old and many are much younger than that. They may no longer be young pups, but I wouldn't classify them as older dogs. And there is also an abundance of young puppies.

It is true that a shelter dog can have issues that a puppy from a good breeder would not. To deny that would be ridiculous. But that doesn't mean they are all cans of worms with multiple issues that need to be worked out. The number of adoptable dogs that would fit nicely into a home environment (with training) greatly outnumbers the dogs who wouldn't.

I guess all I would ask of someone looking for a new dog would be to at least check out the dogs in shelters and in the care of rescue organizations. If you don't find a dog that you click with at any of these places, than go looking for a good breeder to buy from.

Perhaps there should be a tax on all puppies sold that goes to a fund for free spay and nueter for all pet owners. Many of the dogs are back yard dogs or niebor hood dogs ect.. that keep on reproducing. Also many people have unplanned breedings with there niebors dogs even if they are house dogs.
Actually I think that is a good Idea. A tax on all puppies sold for a free spay neuter program.

What a silly argument. The children of the world aren't put in shelters and killed after two weeks if they aren't adopted (like dogs are). There is a human overpopulation problem that governments around the world are trying to control. It is nothing compared to the pet overpopulation problem, which is staggering.

Exactly! :)

This is a bit off topic, but I found it very interesting. A couple weeks ago I watched a news program and they were talking about human overpopulation. Apparently, the world is not as over-populated with humans as we may think. On the program they said that we could fit the whole human population into the state of Texas and still have room left over. :o And we're actually over producing food. :o These things were very suprising to me, but they're true. Just thought I'd share. I know there was more, but I can't remember them all. The program was either on 20/20 or Dateline NBC with that guy that does the "Give me a break" news stories. He was covering the top 10 myths or something like that.

:D

Does that mean that they could all LIVE in Texas? Because I don't think so. Maybe mathematically they could all be squished in but that really has no bearing on whether the world is over populated or not. Determining over population is a lot more complicated than how much space is required to fit a number of people. We could probably "fit" all the dogs in Texas too, but that doesn't mean that there isn't an over population of them.

To be honest Kendalyn I'm not really sure. Like I said I saw the program a couple weeks ago I don't remember his exact words. I'll try to look it up, it might be listed on the program's web site........

Fine, but who should pay the tax? The people who produce the puppies, or the ones who want them? To work, it'd have to be the breeder, not the buyers, because otherwise, you'd have to think about all the "accidental" litters you were talking about... if they get dumped at the pound and PTS from overcrowding, no taxes are going to be gained from their unnecessary births and deaths, and no penalty will be placed on the people who weren't responsible enough to have their dog/s fixed, thus not exactly inspiring them to GET their dog/s fixed - which is kind of the whole point, isn't it?

I only bring it up because you accused us of "burning" breeders, so I assume you're pro-breeder. And while I have no problem with responsible breeders, most pro-breeders tend to be opposed to any fees implemented on breeding dogs because it can hurt the responsible breeders.

Also... I think a fee charged to the producer and not the buyer would actually be a tariff of sorts, not a tax :)
