housebreaking

We have a 11 month old shih tzu, who we have crated trained, but after awhile he was pooping in his crate so we decided not to use his crate any longer, and for a couple of weeks everything was fine, no accidents even when we left the house, then all of a sudden he decided to poop on the couch (never on the floor) and has done it twice (both times he was alone in the house)We take him outside before we leave the house and right when we get home, any suggestions on how to break him from the habit of pooping on the couch.

My puppy has pooped and peed on the couch too and also in my shower while I was taking a shower. I've always had larger dogs so I don't know if small dogs are harder to house break but I'm at my wits end. My boyfriend won't even come over to my house any longer and we are suppose to be buying a house together.

The puppy is a big problem right now. I know a crate won't work b/c he pees and poops then will walk or lay in it :( Then I have to chase him aroound the house which means I'm constantly cleaning... thank god my place is tiled with no carpet! My shih tzu/poodle is 5 months old. He's lucky he is really cute

I wanted to add... at first i thought maybe he was "special".... ie. not very smart. But he has learned to walk on a leash and sit easily. Well the leash training was VERY easy b/c he follows me everywhere any way. So I don't know if he is really leash trained. I guess the test would be if he will walk with someone else. BTW he also has separation anxiety. He will bark for hours.
