With some dogs with erect ears they can move them around quite a bit. I have seen Shepherds with erect ears lay them flat against thier skulls when they are annoyed, frightened, cold etc. I have never seen them flop to the front though...unless the cartilage is not well developed. I do recall when I had my Husky/Shepherd/lab mix he always had one ear up and the other ear down and floppy like a lab...when he got really excited he could bring the floppy ear up to an erect position. My doberman was like this as well...she had her ears cropped...but, the crop didn't take to well as it was done too late...she kept her ears down at all times...but, when she got really excited or happy both her ears would go up.
Were your dogs ears cropped???

No they are totally natural ears. just some times they stand STRAIGHT UP and other times they dont. i cant say as i noticed a corillation with her excitement though. with her they are just down sometimes. I will try to catch some pics to illustrate what i mean. the pic in my avatar is like a halfway point for her ears, they can be down further or up higher. its is very weird, but extremely cute.
she looks like a shark at the back door. she is shorter thn the window, but when she gets ready to come in she sits in fron of the door... all you can see is her ears sticking up into the air!

OKay let me show you a few instances:

Both down:

here is one with one normal ear and one up:

and here are two that show her fully erect:

what makes her ears do this? I am very curious...

This is just a guess, but from the pictures it looks like when she's relaxed they are down, and when she is alert they are up. The one-down one-up may be a halfway mode...kinda alert, but not too much so.

I believe they hear better with the ears up. can catch sound waves easier,
so like when she was outside, she was alert to sounds around her. but inside and comfy, resting they appeared down. Like I said, just a guess.

looking at them again, look at her eyes. When her ears are up, her eyes are open wider, which makes her look more alert to me. In the one where they're both down, her eyes look to be half closed, really relaxed looking.

that's not proof Rott  just an opinion

I have to agree with Courtnek. :D Both my dog's have naturally erect ears, but when they are alert they stick up even further. Also when Abby is relaxed her's have a "roundness" to the top of them, like the ears on an Akita. But whenever she's out and about the "roundness" goes away and they're more pointy. :o  It's sorta wierd........

My GSD pup used to have similar ears as in those pictures. One floppy one up. He grew out of it and now they both stand 24/7, however they do stand different when he's alert. Its funny he can actually turn each ear individually like radar if he wants to!!

You could probably test it when she's sleeping. Surprise her a bit, call her name and if both her ears perk up then its probably an alertness thing.

I gotta agree. Being startled would put her in alert mode instantly, then you can see how her ears react. The eyes got to me, in complete "down"
mode she looke d so relaxed she could fall asleep. All the other shots her eyes were wider and more alert...
