I would apply a disinfectant such as Betadine or Nolvasan...then wrap the leg up as tight as possible...of course not so tight that your going to cut of circulation. If it were bleeding profusly I would first apply pressure to get the bleeding to stop then I would take the dog to the Vet right away...but, if you have been able to get it stopped which it sounds as though you have...just treat with an anti bacterial or disinfectant wrateh leg and have it looked at in the morning by your Vet.

Is it the claw itself or the pad at the leg? It sounds like the claw, but I want to be sure. If it's just the claw, then put some disinfectant on it and tape it back together. or there is hoove repair stuff (kinda like a nail glue) that you can get at Horse feed stores and such. If it's the pad at the leg, then definitely stop the bleeding and get to the vet if possible. Then all of the above advice applies.

You know another thing I just thought of... alot of people do not keep products such as Betadine or Nolvasan in thier first aid kit. In that case what I have used before for my cuts and my dogs is hydrogen peroxide...this works really well for killing any bacterial etc that can get into an open wound. Even if you get blood on your clothes I put hydrogen peroxide on my clothes to get the blood stains out.

roxy just ripped off about half a dew claw last week. the vein was sticking partially out and there was some blood. all i did was get rid of any rough edges on the nail so it wouldn't catch on anything and rip more, clean it thoroughly with peroxide, and make sure she didn't bother it. it's fine now.

the only problem that we have is that he won't let us anywhere near that paw. When we come near him, he tucks it under him.

When I adopted Magic she had an "extra" dew claw (just hanging off) on one of her rear feet - it's not suppose to be there and usually breeders remove it as a puppy. (Who knows where she came from though because she's adopted).
She has two, one on each of her front feet, they're suppose to be there, for a German Shepherd.
When I got her someone suggested I have all three removed becuase they could get caught on something and cause her great pain. I only had the one on the rear foot removed when I took her in to get spayed. I'm glad I didn't have the ones on her front feet removed because I later found out they're suppose to be there and she uses them for everything - it would be like cutting off her thumbs.
Having said that, well...first I would go with what has been recommended here...is it an "extra" dew claw?
