Guest Mutts4Me Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 Sasha got a dog bed for Christmas!!! See? Err... Well, I did say that those two weren't supposed to be in there... Okay, great! Good dog, Sasha! Oh, wait, Sas, staayyyy.... Ahh... Defeat ;) Okay, a few minutes after I took this picture, Sasha shifted downwards and settled in for a nap. Which was a breakthrough. But the problem remains that she doesn't really like her bed. She's 7 and has never had a bed of her own, so she's not really sure what to do with it. The only times she goes in there are the times I ask her to, and she never stays in there, except that nap she took tonight. She has yet to think, Oh, I want to lay in my Cushion (I call it "cushion" so she doesn't confuse "bed" with "bad.") now. Right now, she's sleeping next to the desk chair. So can anyone help me? I want her to realize it's hers, and want to use it. It's supposed to be for her own good (orthropedic support), and it was kind of expensive, so I'd hate to see it turn into a multi-cat bed (they have a few cat beds around the house). I encourage her to get in it, but I don't want to force it on her. Hoping for suggestions from you guys :) Thanks! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 Awwwe! that's just too cute! I wouldn't suggest more then just putting her toys, more likely treats and bones or whatever in it, to intise her in... Coal took to his bed in the living room quite well and quick, although chewed a couple holes in it :-? Quote
courtnek Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 Shara's right. put her toys in it, and "suggest"she lay in it while your around. She's just not used to it yet. Once she realizes how comfirtable it is, she'll probably not want to leave it. it just takes some time when they havent been brought up with one. It took me a long time to get Laurel to lay on a dog bed. She had been used to sleeping in a kennel, on a cement floor...now I cant get her out of it....  Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 Or you could try what works for mine. Just put it somewhere and dare her to touch it. Threaten to behead her if she as much as looks at it. Around here, those tactics pretty much guarantee that my gang will fall all over each other to claim it as their own. Either way, good luck. :D Quote
courtnek Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 LOL@HF!!! YEA, THAT MIGHT WORK. reverse psychology....    Quote
gooeydog Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 I agree with the others, once she realizes how comfy it is, you'll have to pry her out. Until then, maybe toss an old blanket or shirt in there as well so it doesn't smell quite so foreign? We have the opposite problem with Goo, she thinks that any blanket or soft piece of material spread out (or not  ) on the floor is hers, and plays the bag o' cement trick when we try to convince her otherwise  Quote
Guest Mutts4Me Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 Thanks for the suggestions :) I think I'll just keep asking her to lay in it while I'm there. I've been putting her rawhides in there with her, too. I may add one of my shirts or something in there, too, I think that's a good idea. So my new question is - should we try to keep the cats out of it? They really would not like it, and I don't know if it's possible since, well, they're cats. But should we try? Quote
courtnek Posted December 28, 2003 Posted December 28, 2003 I doubt you'll be able to...anything comfortable is a magnet to cats. you may have to shoo them out when she wants to use it. or maybe she will, when she realizes it's hers and no one elses. I think the shirt is a good idea too, make it smell like you - she'll like that Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted December 29, 2003 Posted December 29, 2003 the new bed does not smell right-what did she sleep on before? A blanket or rug could you put in in the new bed? If all fails the cats love it Quote
Holz_Boomer Posted January 1, 2004 Posted January 1, 2004 aww omg what cute pics! everyone is right...put her toys in it and stuff..also put her food and water right beside it and stuff  Quote
Guest Mutts4Me Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 She doesn't have toys - doesn't like them. She does have rawhides, but if we put them in the bed, she takes them out of it to chew on them. Since the bed's in the family room, putting her food and water next to it isn't going to happen. It's slow progress, and the cats still like the bed a whole lot more than the dog does, but this morning, Sasha took the initiative to take a nap in the bed, but she hasn't been back in it since.
