Guest Anonymous Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 I am an owner of a 17 month old husky who does not jump. We still have to lift him out of the car when we are traveling. He didn't even walk on the stairs until he was 12 months of age! I'm not sure if it is just his personality or if it is a breed issue. We have had him ever since he was 8 weeks old. I am considering fostering or possibly adopting a husky I have discovered at a local rescue, but not sure if my fencing is adequate for a dog if he jumps. Does anyone else have experience with huskies? Any jumpers out there? Or are they all afraid to jump? Quote
abker17 Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 Hmm sounds to me like he might be in pain of some sort. I know virtually nothing of the husky breed, but most dogs gladly jump (For most it's a problem) have u had him checked out by a vet? Does he seem to have pain in the hip area? It could just be that he doesn't like to jump, but I dunno that sounds sorta odd to me......... Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 Actually, he is a healthy dog. He jumps all over me when I get home. He doesn't jump out of cars or over fences though. He plays with the golden retriever without any trouble, and has even watched him jump things, but never follows. It was a fight to get him to take the stairs! I have no idea why he doesn't do it. I have had him ever since he was a puppy, and he is certainly not abused. I just wondered if other huskies are like that. Quote
Black GSD Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 NO!!! Your dog is NOT "normal" for a Husky (Sounds like a nice dog though.) They generally ARE jumpers and think nothing of running off. They are BRED to be "runners". For a lot of them, a 6 foot fence won't keep them in. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 I knew about running and digging, but not about jumping. We have a 5 foot chain link fence (which is taller than the last fence we had), and he never attempts to jump. He does try to dig under, but we monitor for that. Not sure why my dog is abnormal, and rather concerned about it. Definitely in no position to foster another, though. Thanks for the reply! Quote
DogPaddle Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 Huskies are on the unofficial escape artist list. Jump, dig, tunnel, climb, squirm, wiggle, chew through . . . they find a way. A husky could be very healthy otherwise but have mild HD (as could any breed.) May jump up on you but not over or up or down things as jumping up on you is not quite the same - there is not the impact in the hips. Or it could be depth perception - animals and people with poor depth perception tend to prefer not to jump distances or go up or down uncertain surfaces as they are not able to gage the elevation of the landing. Or you dog could just be a bit unusual and prefer not to? As for fostering and your fence - there are fence toppers that might work, check your local Home Hardware are any store that has a fair sized fencing gooods section. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 My GF has a Siberian Husky, about 7-8 yo. He's not a big Jumper (over fences and stuff) He does do stairs and jump onto the bed ... I definitly agree about the running off. It really sucks too because he's not really trained AT ALL (I didn't meet her until he was already around 4) Dixie Quote
imported_Kat Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 One thing about Sibs is that they are stubborn and will do things on their terms. We have a guy at Agility that used to bring his bitch Zara and she could jump fine, but on her terms..(usually when she was escaping from the ring  !) To be on the safe side get your dog checked out, but also try teaching your dog to jump in and out of the car. Some dogs just aren't natural and need a bit of guidance. Quote
