Lucky Chaos Posted December 21, 2003 Posted December 21, 2003 Lucky split his nail in half, probably early this morning. Its not a dew claw just a regular nail. It hurts him a lot I can tell, and it was bleeding but stopped now. The problem is, our vet is closed on sundays. Should we take him to the emergency vet, where they charge $50 just for walking through the door? The money isn't an issue, plus we have pet insurance so it dosn't matter but is it worth taking him to the vet today or waiting until tomorrow? Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted December 21, 2003 Posted December 21, 2003 if he is in bad pain I would take him today - if not bandage it to stop it catching on things take him tomorrow Quote
courtnek Posted December 21, 2003 Posted December 21, 2003 Is there a horse feed store anywhere near you? I believe there is stuff you can buy for broken hooves that you can use on your dogs nail. Quote
DogPaddle Posted December 21, 2003 Posted December 21, 2003 Eowyn (11 year old siamese cat) split here nail and the vet we took her to said there was nothing he could do short of taping it up till it heals/grows out. Maybe the vet was no good, I don't know, but if the pain is not to bad I would tape it or use that horse hoof repair or possibly even superglue if you can keep the cat from chewing at it. Good luck. imported_Cassie Posted December 21, 2003 Posted December 21, 2003 A torn nail, can be very painful. You can buy Kwik stop at a local pet store to stop the bleeding or dip the toe in flour and pat the powder in...before doing this clean the nail well to prevent infection from setting in, wash the area well with soap and water, then gently towel it dry and apply a small dab of antibacterial ointment...wrap the paw and then take Lucky to the Vet tomarrow...they will probably remove the entire nail...so Lucky may have to go under Anesthesia, just in case this happens don't give Lucky water in the morning and no breakfast, I'd take his water away before going to bed tonight....this will make it easier for the Vets to safely put Lucky under if they need to in the morning. Once the nail is removed, healing will begin. Eventually, a new nail will regrow. This may take months, and the nail may be malformed. Depending upon the injury, antibiotics may be given. Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 I took my mums dog years ago to the vet with a split nail. The vet removed the nail and put him on antibiotics Quote
Lucky Chaos Posted December 22, 2003 Author Posted December 22, 2003 Thanks everyone. It dosen't seem to be bothering him at all except we can't really go near it, cause Lucky hates anything to do with his nails. When he was a pup we took him to our old vet to be neutered and he came home with really short nails and has been really afraid ever since. But it has stopping bleeding and we wrapped it up. He was running around like usual this morning (and yes we did try to stop him  ) So I don't think he's in that much pain. Quote
