Rottweilers will be banned in Guysborough County...
"we've had complaints over the years about Rottweilers and public support for the amendment is very positive" Warden Lloyd Hines said Monday.
An amendment will be made to a municipal bylaw that banned pit bulls six years ago.
Rottweiler owners will be given six months to a year to relocate their dogs after the bylaw passes in February. Before an amendment to a bylaw becomes effective, it must be preceded by two months notice.
Rottweilers have been blamed for a number of attacks, including one that killed four year old James Waddell on the Kingston Peninsula in New Brunswick earlier this year.

Where does it end????

They're not even going to have a grandfather clause!?!? That's even more nuts than banning the breed to begin with. That's totally unfair to make current owners rehome their dogs.

:o OMG!!!!! I can't even begin to think what I would do if this happened in my state/city. My fur babies are gentle giants! With all the kisses I get from them I could never say they are dangerous!
That make me so mad when stupid laws are passed!

DId i ever tell you guys about the "incident" that we had in western nebraska... involving the sheriff of some small town, a trigger happy deputy and three rottwilers?

It was a few years ago. Maybe three. I remember it only mostly because i had just gotten Daz, it was is Nebraska, and it was so cruel.

Western Nebraska for those who have never seen it is nothing. Literally, its all farm land; the occasional house with hundreds of acres of nothing around it. the only way you can tell on field from the next is the fences. Well fences get old, fences break, and need to be maintained. sounds like an easy job but whne you have miles of fence to keep up with its easy enough to miss a spot. and people with dogs know that dogs will find that one spot once and remeber where it is forever. Well apparently there was a family out there that had 3 rotties. one older female about 4 a younger male who was 2 and a pup female that was 5 months or so. the dogs were known by every one in the area and had never caused a problem.
What happened was one day that dogs were out raoming like they always did during the day.. and the owner got a phone call that the neighbor had heard gun shots and wanted to know if she had heard them too. it wasnt unusaul to hear rifle shots but these were not shot like a hunter would be shooting this was a series of shots all real close together then a pause and more shots. She said she hadnt heard anything and hung-up. then thought about it...she got worried about her dogs and went outside calling them in. Nothing. so called her husband in from the barn and asked him to take one of the horses and go find the dogs because one of the neighbors heard some shots and she was worried. About an hour later he returned without dogs but said he saw a hole in the fence whil he was out and thought the dogs might have gotten out.
They jumped in the truck and started out that way to look around. the dogs had gotten out before and were found playing in the fields so she thought that would be a good place to start the search. they found the dogs in the field just like last time onyl this time they were not playing together, she first saw them from a distance the fields were tan so the dogs black coats were readily visible. she called them and no response so they started to drive toward them and she was so mad that these dogs were making her come all the way to the field to get them. As she neared she sloed the truck as Shock came over her at the site.

The first one she saw was the male.. he had been shot at least twice in the head as well as a few times to the side. The female and the pup were both side by side almst touching and also had multiple gunshot wounds and were dead. the woman picked her dogs up and took them home to be buried there. but the kicker of the thing is that the neighbor noticed the deputy's car driving by the field after she had hung up the phone. after they had got home she called and the told the neighbor the news and the neigbor shared the information with her. so she callled the sheriff of the town to ask about the dputy and her dogs. the sheriff said he wasnt there but he would ask him about it and get back to her.

the sheriff called her and said that the deputy was attacked by her dogs and had to shoot them to get away from being mauled. He said that he saw the dogs in the field and wanted to return them but when he neared they growled at him and he had to shoot them to keep from being bitten. She was agasp her dogs were extremely friendly , all of the neighbors and people that have met her dogs without incident. she too them to town with her and had never even seen them growl. she doubted thier ability to even protect the farmhouse...she told the sheriff these things and he simply said "Those dogs turn anyway.. probably for the best"
by this time she was so upset she screamed into the phone and hung-up.

I dont know what happened after that but i do know that they referenced that case to get BSL approved in Friend, nebraska. where its illegal to have "dangerous" dogs. and if you go to friend and have a dog with you it will be taken to the pound until you can prove that you dont live there, and will not be given to you until you leave the city.

This really upsets me, I live fairly close to N.S. Canada

kendalyn...I never heard of the Grandfather clause, do they give the owners more time to rehome their babies?
I couldn't imagine what I would do if this happened in my province...my dogs, especially my Rottie are my life! she is like my child...how would you give up your own child? I'd have to move or protest.
The thing that gets me is that if people actually understood our Canine companions there would not be so many problems and breeds would not be banned.
After the incident with the Waddell boy Rotties have a very bad name around here....I can't even be seen in public with my Rottie, last week I had a lady yell at me, another friend of mine who shows her Rotties and puts them through obedience trials, uses them for therapy dogs and has Canine good citizens awards on all of her dogs...she was stopped while walking her dogs on a private country lane by a neighborhood women who lives about 2 miles away...the neighbor yelled at her stating she was frightened to let her children out side to play for fear my friends Rotties would kill them!!!! these dogs have a wonderful home where they live indoors with the owners own chidren...oh by the way....the neighborhood children are no longer allowed to come up to play at this house since there are Rotties there...they always played there before, and my friend has always been very concientious of her dogs and had them in the kennel while children were up...even though they probably would have loved to come out and play.

Ohh wow ROTT what an awful story  That is horrible and I would bet not one of those rotties growled at the deputy. He was just saving his @$$!

As for banning Rotties...why? I mean come on they are not that bad...! There use to be one in our agility class...sweetest thing there was.

Rio (my over friendly golden) ran off from me on the course at class and ignored my recall and went to visit the rottie. She jumped full force on top of him and he grabbed her cheek. The great thing about it was that he is sooo nice he did not even leave drool on her face and let go right away. Now it served her every bit of what she got...and ya know what I am sitting her ever so thankful that she chose the Rottie rather than the pointer mix as the pointer mix would have taken her face apart. So they ban the rotts but what about that mixed breed that is much more likely to eat your dog? The pointer mix at agility likes to have her space ... in which she would not have had with Rio jumping on her...I know for sure had Rio picked her she would have had to have multiple stictches...now with the Rott...not even a mark on her face.

This is B*ll Sh*t! People are idiots...Wish we could ban all non dog people from this world! And that deputy would be one of the first on my list! :evilbat:

I had the same response when I had my 3 boys. I'd get awfull stares, and everyone I ran into would cross the street or tell me to hold them closer, they might attack. I even went to Petco with them & one woman with a tiny little Yap-Yap dog let her dog run lose, and when the boys came in the door she gasped and snatched the little dog away from my guys, saying "My god, why do you let such vicous dogs in here" I just rolled my eyes, and left. I never went back with them.

Rotties, APBT's, German Shepherds etc. have been around along long time...what happened to the days of yesteryear when we seemed to be more dog smart???? when I was a child we used to gather all the neighborhood dogs including our own dogs...the breeds and mixed breeds consisted of Husky's, Shepherds, pit bull type dogs (just looked like them, probably were not full blooded as they liked the other dogs) border collie (my dog) shepherd/husky mix (my dog), Great Dane/Shepherd, Rottie mix etc. there were no little dogs in my neighborhood, all big dogs. We never had a problem, we just seemed to be more dog smart...and our parents knew alot about dogs and other animals as they grew up on farms etc. and they taught us common sense around them. A friend of mine was nipped one day for trying to shove grass up a local Great Dane/Shepherd's nostrils...the dog did not break skin, just a warning nip...my friends parents punished my friend, not the dog...and they asked why he did some thing so stupid.
Did we have more stable dogs back then, or perhaps people were a little bit smarter????

People now a days are afraid of every little thing. That coupled with a lack of common sense is a dangerous thing.

The other day some jackass was jogging at the local off the leash dog park. The idiot ran over one over one of our dogs basically kicking it in the face exclaiming "stupid dog!!" Needless to say some words were exchanged with the potential for more.

I question this fool as to why he's jogging in a public off the leash dog park in the first place? No answer. Stupid stupid stupid, I see people like this all the time. I can only imagine what would have happen had one of our dogs decided to fight back and bite this idiot (which is what he deserved).

Poor breeding of GSD's and Pitbulls might be common place but I tell ya poor breeding of Human Beings is way more common!

More people actually had mutts and mixes in the old days. Only the wealthy could afford purebred dogs, and they had servants to take care of them. also landed property where they could run. I think a big part of the problem is that some people want the "prestige" of a purebred, without
wanting the work involved. Working dogs need to work, herders need to herd, retrievers, to retrieve. The purebreds were bred for a reason that
is rarely ever nowadays carried out. Instead, people buy purebreds for looks, or for protection, or because the dog is unusual and gets a lot of attention for the owners. Well, we dont have servants, we dont have landed property, we dont have a job for these dogs to do, and yet we still
have the dogs....responsible owners recognize that their dog may need special care, training, a job, agility, something to keep it occupied and
mentally stimulated. Two of the best examples of this are the Border Collie
and the GSD. People bought GSD's (badly bred because of greed) in the 70's and it became the problem child of the dog world. Why? they wanted "protection"...ANY dog will protect you, they were buying guarding
breed dogs and not training them....or training them entirely wrong...

The best story I ever saw as far as protection was the little pekignese
that latched onto a burgler's leg and wouldnt let go. He kicked it, threw it away from him, repeatedly, and it kept coming back for more. He was protecting his pregnant mistress and was not going to back down.
She was able to call the police, and eventually the guy gave up (he couldnt defeat this tiny dog) and ran for it, and the police got him.
She had a kennel of guard dogs outside, because she was on landed
property and they were for alert warning outside...but the little pekignese came to her aid in the pinch...
