courtnek Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 I have been searching for a two-dog leash..where I could walk both dogs on one lead...all the ones int he store have two to three foot extensions from the main leash, and that's not what I wanted. While I work on Laurel's fears, she needs some space...so I took two 6-foot leashes, and attached them to a flexi-lead at the handles...PERFECT!! I can walk them together without them tripping over each other, and Laurel feels less confined, and walks nicely... Freebee feels less confined as well. so they dont fight over "where do we go now"...they both have space to check things out on their own.,... :) :) :) Quote
Lucky Chaos Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 What a great idea! We have one of those two dog leashes which we don't use cause its useless just for that reason. When we only had two dogs we used to use it, and since Chaos was a puller and Lucky likes to walk behind me it was a disaster, and the walks weren't much fun. To sell something like that in stores would probably be very handy to a lot of people. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 wow!! great idea!! haha i'm to lazy to look i guess.. i just hold both of their leashes in one hand.. they do great after they have been walking for a few mins! Quote
abker17 Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 Neat idea Courtnek! Unfortunatly I have to walk both mine seperatly. :( But I might be able to use that idea someday, sometimes if my friends go away I walk thier dogs for em' and that would make things a lot easier. :) Quote
courtnek Posted December 7, 2003 Author Posted December 7, 2003 I was walking them on two leashes originally, and that was a disaster...they would entangle themselves and me up in the lines by crossing over each other. I have used flexies to give them soon room to investigate, and the two six foot leashes gives them enough room that they dont have to be in each others faces, and can explore without tangling too badly. thanks everyone! :) Quote
DogPaddle Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 I have a splitter for the boys - they manage to get tangled on that tiny thing, I think its because Kavik sees no problem in squeezing under Zaphod to get where he wants to go. Still after the first 10 min or so of their walk they seem to get the idea. I do walk them on two leashes in one hand as well but that is usually after the first half on our walk, they walk on the short splitter first to remind them about heeling. Courtnek do you find people are unusually interested in your dogs because you walk two of them together? Quote
courtnek Posted December 7, 2003 Author Posted December 7, 2003 yea DP I do...people always stop and ask if I am dog-sitting or dog-walking for profit. When I say no., they're both mine then they ask what they are and why they're so different....some have said they thought most people got the same kinds of dogs in one household....(??????) Laurel gets alot of looks and attention. Hounds (except for Beagles) are very rare around here. Although I think one of the neighbors has gotten one. I can hear it baying, but havent seen it yet....and it's not the Beagle. His bay is different, higher pitched.... :) Quote
DogPaddle Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 I guess I can see people getting two of the same dog if your really in love with its breed characteristics or maybe compete or something but I like my variety. Zaphod and Kavik are very different and that is why I don't have a favourite between them, I love them both because they each give me something different. I find the same thing when I walk both dogs. Some people seem to think that having two dogs is decadent or something, some look horribly worried like - how can she possibly control two dogs, some get that ooooh two doggies to pat look and some laugh at Kavik squirming under Zaphod. LOL - yep!! "Dont they fight?" "Are they both housebroken?" "aren't you afraid they'll bite someone?" "Is the black one mean?" (why does everyone assume black dogs are mean?) "Isnt that a lot of vacuuming?" (hard-wood floors) and my most annoying one....."Do you REALLY thinks it's necessary to have more than one dog?" necessary? no..I happen to like them both...oh, and I have a cat, and a pond turtle as well. Dont have to clean up after the pond turtle, that's my son's job.... Then I get "the completely disgusted look" and the "What, are you running a ZOO?" to which I always reply, completely straight faced "Oh no, I need a license for that....otherwise I'd consider opening a kennel in my yard..." then they look horrified and hurry away...My bad, I know....     Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 Great idea Court! When I had Blue and Hazel, I always wanted to get one of them things two dog attachment thingys, but Hazel with her aggression problems, attached to poor old Blue with his arthritus, wouldn't have worked out well :-? Besides, Blue was really good at heeling offlead, so I barely used a leash on him anyway :D Hearing you guys talk about having two dogs really makes me can't wait until I can move out and get another dog! :D I really miss having two! :( Quote
Holz_Boomer Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 What A Perfect Idea! Well Done Court! :D Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 I tried a spliter when Paddy and Glasis were puppies but Paddy being stronger would pull Gladis where he wanted to go, next I used two 7ft leather leads which I attatch together one dog on my right the other on my left with the lead going around my back works for me :) Quote
courtnek Posted December 7, 2003 Author Posted December 7, 2003 I have to admit that's more innovative than my solution....    Quote

Of course I tell them no, there not related and all fixed, but I really don't see how people come to that conclusion they all look totally different except for the fact their all black. Quote
DogPaddle Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 Do you REALLY thinks it's necessary to have more than one dog?" Well maybe not absolutely necessary . . . but close, kinda. The boys are so much happier with two. If I have to leave them for six hours or something they don't get crazy bored too. As for the black dog thing, unfortunately my boys don't do much to change peoples opinion. Zaphod is skitty around other dogs and barks (excitedly) if someone comes to pat him, Kavik has recently taken to being afraid of children - so there are very people we pass on the street that I will stop to chat with or let pat the boys at this time. :( Quote

The eyes widen and the nose wrinkles as I mention there are five more at home. I have no trouble at all controlling all five at one time. Perry, Pauly & Peyton can walk on a single leash homemade splitter setup, only mine's a little different. I got a length of chain about 3 feet long and attach each end, with a swivel snap hook, to two dogs' collars and a swivel snap in the middle to another. Then I can attach a single leash which also has a swivel snap end to the middle of the chain closest to the middle dog and it's a splitter. It sounds more complicated than it really is. Three dogs are on one leash, Devin is on another and Peanut is almost never leashed  . If need be, I can carry her. She doesn't mind a leash and walks well on one. I have just never really used one much for her (bad, bad owner! ). About the people who seem so disgusted about having multiple dogs... I always tell them that I much prefer dog hair and the smell of dogs over punch stains, vomit, dirty diapers and sour milk. I don't have kids. :) Quote
Malamum Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 Why do people have to stick their noses into other peoples lives and tell them what "they" think is right. :x What business is it of any of these people to tell someone else that they have too many dogs. :x The way I see it is that these people are lacking and unhappy in their own lives so they have to put down someone who is so obviously happy (with lots of dogs how could you not be) to make themselves feel better. imported_Snickers Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 That's a really good idea! My best friend is getting a puppy soon. We're gonna walk our puppies together and I always thought that the double leashes were too small, there isn't enough space. So this will help us out a lot. Thanks! Quote

Horsefeathers! Posted December 9, 2003 Posted December 9, 2003 Ya know, now that you point that out, I reckon I do! Kind of like a reverse Oreo cookie. I never even thought about it. :D Quote
