kendalyn Posted December 6, 2003 Posted December 6, 2003 So I'm working with Buck on learning the "pick it up" command and he's coming along pretty well. He will pick up the toy and hand it to me when I tell him to pick it up. So far we have only used his toys as the object to pick up mostly because he likes picking them up and is used to doing so. Yesterday I decided to try another object and see if he would do it. I put a plastic coat hanger on the floor (it was handy at the time, there was no real reason for choosing this particular object)and asked him to pick it up. He ran away and came back with a toy! So, I thought we were doing pretty well but I think it's going to be hard to get the idea out of his head that he needs to go find a toy. I think the main problem is that he never picks up things that aren't "his". He knows which toys are ok for him to play with and I don't think it has ever occured to him to play with "our" toys. He just leaves everything else alone. And obviously I don't want him to play with other objects, just pick them up. So this is going to take a lot more work. I couldn't stop laughing when the funny guy came running back with a rope toy dragging on the floor! He looked so proud too! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003   It's funny cuz I know how you feel! I tried to teach Hazel the same thing, and got the same reaction!  Quote
pei obssessed Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 funny indeed  maybe "pick it up" can now become a command to bring over one of his toys  Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted December 7, 2003 Posted December 7, 2003 when we went to classes the instructer give me a small plastic box with a pull off lid -inside I put a treat I through the box a few ft away I told Paddy to fetch Paddy did nothing but the dog next to us ran and got it took it to his owner--when the dog brings back the box you open it and give the treat Quote

But I'm glad she doesn't like fetching: I love watching her wrestle with other dogs much better  Quote
