iceyshiver21 Posted November 25, 2003 Posted November 25, 2003 As I was reading my Dog Fancy today, I read an Artical on Parvo. As a few of you know I lost a puppy to parvo last year. We tried everthing to save him. But Parvo is a very deadly dieses in pups. I looked for information every where from the moment we found out. I found NOTHING! The vet said just to make sure we kept fluids in him and hope for the best, and he gave him a shot and us some vitamin stuff. No I find out that there somthing else I could have done to save him. By feeding him pediasure which is filled with electrolytes. It could have saved him. If only I had known...so I guess I posted this so everyone else knew for future referance. Quote

Guest Anonymous Posted November 26, 2003 Posted November 26, 2003 I just wanted to make a little note here... Icey, dont feel bad.... Pediasure , alone, will not save a pup from parvo. The highest chance for the pup to survive is to put in an IV. I am VERY suprised your vet did not do an IV!!! Since Pediasure is taken orally it rarely stays in the stomach, as Parvo causes vomitting...but the IV will hydrate the pup completely. I really dont like the fact that a magazine prints these kind of articles. It is very misleading. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 26, 2003 Posted November 26, 2003 Hmmmm. napisaĆ(a):I am VERY suprised your vet did not do an IV!!! Actually, very often a vet will not start an IV for someone who can't afford the full treatment, so they will advise other at-home options for treatment. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do with the resources available. My vet often recommends Pedialyte for parvo dogs where the owners can't afford the hospitalization and vet treatment. kendalyn Posted November 26, 2003 Posted November 26, 2003 My dog did not have Parvo but he was dying from an unknown ailment that also caused him to stop eating and barely drink. I requested admission and an IV to rehydrate him and the vet said no. Some won't do it. I have no idea why. She just said that they don't do that. Quote
