Guest Anonymous Posted November 15, 2003 Posted November 15, 2003  I'm trying to teach Webster to heel, and so far its been disasterous! :o I'm using a clicker, and he loves it and all other things work great with it. But heeling... He stays right by my side, yes. He looks at me almost the whole time, too. But instead of walking, he bounces!! It is sooo funny! He just goes up and down, up and down, all the time. Which makes me start laughing and that probably makes him think that oh so cute he is! :-? Which he is!  I haven't laughed so much as when I have a puppy! :) Quote
imported_Kat Posted November 15, 2003 Posted November 15, 2003 lol neaaaaa you aren't supposed to encourage him by laughing :P He sounds like he is doing fine, just remember to reward him and keep him motivated as you sound like you are doing  Quote
courtnek Posted November 15, 2003 Posted November 15, 2003    He'll be fine. As long as he stays by your side, in the correct heel position, let him bounce. Puppies have lots of energy to expend. As he gets older, the bouncing will probably stop on it's own. and laughing is only bad if he's done something bad, even if it's funny... I had to stop myself from splitting my sides when my son was a baby, picked up a spoonful of mashed potato's, and flung them at his dad.... we both had to leave the room before we cracked up, cuz we did not want to encourage that behavior....but I think your pups bouncing will stop as he gets a little older and has expended some of that endless puppy energy they have. He's probably just happy to be out with you, and is showing it by wriggling and bouncing. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 16, 2003 Posted November 16, 2003 give him a chance to expend some energy before you start yout training sessions. that helps with everything, not just bouncing while heeling. :) Quote
imported_nea Posted November 17, 2003 Posted November 17, 2003 I have this laughing problem with everything he does! :o I think jumping up to greet me is so adorable, so I laugh. He hasn't gotten much better at not jumping. Now I know why! But I think I've come to the conclusion that if I want MY dog to greet ME that way, then THAT is the way its going to be. And I can teach him a good "sit" so he can sit when others want to pet him. Most people I spend time around don't mind muddy paw prints on them though, luckily! :) I don't think its possible to tire (sp?) him out before we train heel... This puppy won't tiere! At least not on walks. He'll just keep going, keep running, bouncing, whatever. Then when we get home he curls up at my feet and falls into an exhauseted sleep!  Quote
