does nobody remember that this dog brutally killed another dog a month ago?? or got loose and was hit by a car because she wouldn't come to anyone?....or that she was NOT at all cooperative at the vets? has behaviour issues? come on people....it's obvious that someone who is aware of ALL of this dogs problems called the authorities in order to prevent further damage, sorry shar but you can't control this animal, and someone needs to!!

I personally do not believe that a dog who kills another dog, under some circumstances, is or should be labelled "dangerous". If some Shar-pei's can be prone to dog aggression, then like Gooey said "the dog may very well have been acting within the breed's normal temperament".

Plus she did not run loose and kill another dog, she was in her own backyard and killed her housemate. Dogs are not all dog friendly and if something like this happens, be it a cat or dog. It is very sad, and I think even more so when your dog kills a strange dog/cat because then you are not only dealing with your grief, but the grief of another. Someone who's pet was killed, someone who probably dearly loved his/her pet.

Just because Sassy did kill her housemate, does not make her dangerous in my eyes. I think she does need some professional help, which Shar is seeking for her. She has Sassy properly confined from what it sounds like, and is a proactive owner. People do make mistakes, and some people do not make an attempt to clean them up or fix them...but Shar is. I think she deserve a lot of credit for trying to work with her beloved dog, it's clear her heart is the right place and is doing the right thing to have her dog properly trained and everything else.

Boy, what I missed last night & this morning. Sassy was taken to AC & UPS, and shown that she isn't a pit, but a pei. Everyone at UPS was very kind, and very sorry that a sub driver made a claim that was false. She wasn't happy about being around a bunch of stangers, but she sat by me, under the sit stay comand. At AC I explained to them Sassy does have issues with agression. And I gave them the phone # to my beaviorist & my vet. I also brought pictures of my yard & fences, and the Beware of dog signs. I told them that she was inside the house when she barked. I was told one of the complaints was when she got lose that day, and growled at a person trying to grab her.

And to concered pet owner,

The dog Sassy attacked & Killed was a dog I picked up off the street, I rescued her from a gas station, not knowing that Sassy was dog agressive. Everything was fine until I let them in the backyard togther, then that's when they sparks flew, and unfortuntely Sassy killed the other dog.

I go to 2 classes a week and we also vist a behaviorist 1 a week. She is doing much better with dog-agression, but her human fear agression isn't. I put so much into Sassy, she's a furry kid. And I will not give up on her. Yes it's been a struggle, and It's going to take a long time to get her decnet with strangers, but I'm doing all that I can.

First off, remove the "Beware of Dog" signs. That is almost admitting that you have an aggressive dog who will bite. If this goes to court, you will lose because of the signs.

Find something lighter and more fun to use as a sign.

Wow ....... Sassy must be feeling much better after having her leg amputated only what ..... 10 days ago! I would think that the recovery is longer, but I don't know.

Remove those signs ........ it's asking for trouble.

This is so odd, the dog is barking behind the door at someone and there were still complaints? Odd, you would think a UPS guy would understand this, or maybe you misunderstood?

I still can't believe I have to remove the Beware of Dog signs, I'm trying to protect anyone who comes to our house. We're looking for a sign that say's "Shar-pei on duty" Or "Shar-pei security".

Dogs heal faster then some think, she has made great progress, but she's no where near 100%. I wouldn't say she's healed, just makeing strides in getting better. I swear I might start :drinking: after all of this  :-?

Shar:

If you don't mind buying online here's a great place for some signs...

http://www.barkersusa.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=SHAR

You can also look on ebay.

Here are some other online places..

http://pedigreepress.safeshopper.com/43/3039.htm?340

http://www.dogweb.nl/shopping/sharpei/outdoor.html

That last one has the nicest I think, except for two signs..you will see which.

For right now..go and buy some clear plastic paper protectors, and some normal or if you want heavy cardboard paper. And make your own sign, slip in the plastic so it won't get wet and stick it on the fence or where ever you had the old ones!

I really don't like the last 2 :x Espically the Unpredictable Dispostion :x :x That's just asking for trouble. I really like the Security System one. We might spring for that one.

Bullsh*t about removing the signs  !!!

I have a Border Collie and Golden Retriever who certainly are not aggressive in any form, but the signs are up so people like burglars are warned and think twice about trying to burgle us. We had the signs before we even had dogs for heavens sake!

we've had signs since we had our first dogs, the rotties, and they've stayed with us from them to Sassy. They serve a purposse to me & to Sassy. Gives people a warning there is a dog on the property

Having a dog, and having signs that warn that there is a dog on the property, are enough. You are still sending the same message just in a way that won't hold you liable. But to each their own.

oh Shar i can`t believe this is happening to you, you`ve had sooo much to deal with latley. :(

i hope this gets sorted out quickly and the complaints get dropped. it makes me soooo angry to think animal control will just take someones word without coming to see for themselves  , now that`s just ridiculous :x

i would be really tempted to go to the papers with this one :x

please keep us updated, we`re here for you.

sending you, becky and Sassy loads of hugs.

IMO, signs help you keep everyone safe, and prevent problems. But it seems that it's causeing a problem that is so far fetched, and crazy. Sassy is in her house, or her yard & she can't even bark to tell me someone is out there, with out being called a Dangerous Dog owner.

I'm bloody fed up with this nonsense. She our dog, we're doing what we can to curb her aggresion problems. She stays in her yard, on leash since her acident, yet if she barks we get in a big up-roar. She's a dog, she has to communiacate some way. I'm not going to de-barker, or anything rash like that, I want a dog to tell me someone is there, come see. If not whats the point. I have an idea on why one person might have made the call to AC, and it has nothing to do with the dog, but more with Becky & I's lifestyle :x Yes when Sassy did get out, she did growl when this person tried to chase her, but she didn't lay a tooth on her nor anyone else. Her issues at the vets office have been there before her acident, and they know how she is, and I do the best thing & muzzle her before the vet examins her.

Yes I'm ranting, venting and what have you. But I'm just fed up. :x :x

well said Shar :D

you are probably right about the nieghbour, she`ll probably use anything as a weapon to get at you and Becky, and i think her weapon at the moment is poor Sassy. People of your nieghbours mentality will stoop to any level to cause trouble for you. and you usually find that ere`s no reasoning with them either  I really do feel for you right now.

I`m with you on the barking thing too, of course our dogs have to comunicate it would be cruel to stop our dogs from comunicating with us...even though i know some retards would like to have dogs voice boxes removed if they could. We want our furbabies to tell us when someone`s there and be able to comunicate with us.

oh by the way this is Jen again(still can`t sign in :x )

Signs are FINE! Just the RIGHT ones!

Maybe you need a sign that says "Beware of Owner!" LOL

Posted

Shar I am not surprised that you are pissed off. Signs are certainly a good thing and as for them sending out the wrong signals, if you didn't have a sign you would be more liable. You are doing and have done everything right.

i agree with Kat,you are doing everything right.
Shar you are a responsible owner, don`t let ignorant peole get to you.

Nice Cheap Shot  Guest, if you know so much, why don't you sign up here, or at least post the name you do post under if your haveing loging in problems.

So a Beware of Dog sign is the wrong kind, what should I say? "Bad Dog"? "Agressive animal"?

Maybe I need a Beware of Owner sign, I'm passionate dog owner, I care alot about my dog. She's the world to me & Becky. We're fighting to keep her safe & keep the negihbor hood safe at the same time. Why do you think I'm going to a Behaviorist & trainer. I wish I could just have my dog, and wish all these God D*mn haters would leave me & my dog alone.

I did not read all the replies, so this may have been said already, but Sharpei, the more I think about this the more it aggravates me.

EVEN IF Sassy was a Pit Bull, SO WHAT? She was enclosed inside, was not threat to the carrier, and she was, quite simply, BEING A DOG!!!

Most dogs will make some noise when a stranger approaches the house,
from a teacup poodle to a St. Bernard....it's in their nature, and since she was enclosed and no threat to the carrier it doenst matter WHAT kind of dog she is!!!

grrrrrr......I would waltz her into AC and let them have it......

but make sure you take all the vet paperwork and your kennel paperwork with you....then point out to them that AC should be able to identify a breed of dog since THAT'S THEIR JOB......

I did that today, and they where a bit surprised to see a pei, instead of a pit. But they told me, a woman called them saying Sassy growled at her when she got lose that day. So she still has a mark on her record. But UPS dropped the claim. They where sorry that a SUB Driver made a claim about a dog barking inside the house. It wasn't like she was outside & was attacking him. So I still have to deal with one report.

Shar, I hope this doesnt disturb you, but I am your friend and it has to be said.

If your neighbor objects to your "lifestyle" and is taking it out on Sassy,
you could very possibly have a harrassment issue on your hands. Some people have their heads up their asses day to day, and cant adjust to anything different than what they believe in. If this particular neighbor
gives you any more grief about this, file a complaint.

Posted

I know all about that. Believe me we've looked into it as a Harassment issue. And if it gets any worse between us & this Negihbor we'll be takeing action.

I swear our lives aren't easy ever :drinking:

Thanks. Sassy's problems, have become our problems in away. We're the ones who have to look out for her & her saftey, and everyone elses saftey as well. I had no idea that when I got Sassy at 7 weeks that at 8months, that i'd be fighting a battle just to keep her. But she's the world to me & Becky. I know she's got her problems, but don't most dogs. I feel singled out at times, for who we are.

Posted

feeling singled out is not unusalu in your situation...closed minds remain closed until something happens to make them open...

Sassy is a comfort to you and Becky, and you love her, and that's ALL that matters. ALL dogs have issues....Freebee nipped one of my sons friends because he tried to take her food (a discarded pizza box that THEY left on the floor....)and he made a big deal out of it, even tho she didnt break skin....it was more of a warning nip than anything, but I dont tolerate my dogs laying teeth to flesh for ANY REASON....so she got put through the whole sit, stay, down, behave routine, until she "apologized" (by licking his hand that she nipped) for her behaviour. I feel this is safer, even though I told him "you dont take food away from a dog you dont know well...."

so I guess he could call animal control and say I have a food aggressive dog, altho she's never done this before...I think all the noise, and
loudness, just put her off...

I also made them clean up all the food traces and take out the trash, so they were punished right along with her..no issues since then...

:)
