Ok well we are FINALLY going to meet with the surgeon on sunday morning to talk about Zebra's Hip Dysplacia. I'm so happy that we are finally going to go..but i'm still a little scared. I have some questions that I'm going to ask him but I wanted to know if there was anything else I should ask.

Here is what I have so far-
- How often have you preformed this type of surgery? What precent of these surgery's is a total sucess?
-Does this surgery require special equipment? Is it available?
-What should I expect the outcome of the surgery to be?
-What fallow-up care is needed/Necessary?
-What should our realistic expectations be after the surgery?

That's all i have...any suggestions on what else to ask?

I'm really happy with the vet that will be preforming this operation he is board certified from The America College of Veterinary Surgeons. He has been threw a three year residency program and has had his reseach published. And he specalizes in Orthapedic surgery.

Well I'll tell you all how it goes when I get back from the vets on Sunday.

How about questions about the anesthesia:

What type? how long with the dog be under anesthesia after the surgery?

Will they bring her right out of the anesthesia after the surgery?

How long will she be hospitalized (estimated time)?

Can you come to feed her?

Will she be on antibiotics? If so, what kind and how long?

When will they try to get her up on her feet? Can you help in doing that?

How long will she need to be "crated" or kept under "control" at home?

How long do they estimate the surgery to be?

What type of hip dyplasia surgery is it? Are they replacing the entire hip, or just shaving and reshaping the femur to go into the socket? Is there arthritis or calcification of the joint/socket?

Just off the top of my head, this is what I can think of.

Good luck!!!

I would also ask him to define what he calls a "total success". Sounds like a no brainer but, sometimes a total success surgically can still mean restrictions in activity for the rest of their life. (I know nothing about this type of surgery. I'm thinking in relation to wobblers and how surgeons define success with that. Dog's mobility is still very bad but, the surgery was a success.)

Good luck with the surgical consult! I am hoping everything gets explained to your satisfaction and that you feel comfortable with the procedure after you meet with the surgeon. We will be thinking of you Sunday! :D

Judy touched on some excellent points here. I am a firm believer
in "home healing" - animals and people do much better at home when they are healing, in familiar surroundings and with people they love....
