JackieMaya Posted October 25, 2003 Posted October 25, 2003 I used the Gentle Leaders on Jackie and Maya today for the first time. And for the first time, I took my dogs for a walk, instead of the other way around! When I first put them on, Jackie pouted and Maya had a little temper tantrum. But after walking around in front of my house for about 5 minutes, they were both great, and both walked right beside me on a loose leash! The thing I didn't like about the Gentle Leader (LOL) is that I ended up walking faster than usual because I wasn't trying to hold my dogs back! So I got a real good work-out! I could really feel it in my legs by the time we got home! So it's actually great for all three of us! My two girls (160 pounds worth together) used to really pull, especially for the first half of our walk. Now they are perfect little girls, and were still wagging their tails. I've lost 40 pounds so far, and taking my dogs for a brisk walk every day is going to help the weight to keep coming off! So I highly recommend the Gentle Leader! Quote

Doglistener Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 Hi All there is a technique whereby you can teach your dog to heel without the use of any aid including gentle leaders check chains halti's or harnesses. WALKING TO HEEL Firstly you should understand why the dog pulls, it is either Anticipation, this one doesn't pull on the way back from the park! Dominance this one wants to lead the hunt and pulls at all times. Fear puller only pulls on the way back from the park. However there is also a fourth one and quite often this can be one of the main reasons dogs pull. Dogs like to feel you at the end of the lead, it gives them comfort when they are ahead and can't actually see you. Irrespective of the motive or the reason this technique works for all: 1. A proper leather or canvas collar, not a thin one but a normal fairly wide one, thin rolled collars bite into the neck, therefore I would not recommend them. Never use a check or choke chain this is a barbaric outdated method of lead control and their isn Quote
