Aww man, Sharpeigirl you are just having the worst month with doggies. I am so sorry, I hope when I get back from my trip there is some good news. Please keep us up to date on Sassy's recovery, I for one know she will be ok! Brooklyn, Jaeden and Tydo are all keeping their paws crossed for her and you. Hang in there, be strong and give your girl a kiss from us all!

Been a long night, morning & afternoon. Sassy's been in surgery to try & fix her back left leg, it's in bad shape. She had to have her tail removed, it was to far gone to save. It's just a waiting game right now. Vets want to see if she'll ever regain the use of that leg before moveing on to Amputation. She's under heavy sedation, and her heart & lungs seem to be okay, no problems there but it's her back legs they are messed up, left leg was worse then the right. But the right might have suffered nerve damage. Luck has not been on my side these last few months

oh Sharpei.......

I am so dreadfully sorry....tears falling for you and Sassy....

I have a fear that something like that will happen here - my kid and his
friends leave the doors open all the time....

We are here for you...and know that even if they have to amputate,
dogs can get along fine on three legs....poor Sassy...I hope she feels
better and is home with you real soon!!!

:( :(

Thank you all for the suport & kind words at this time. Sassy has a long road ahead, and for me, money is tight, but Sassy means more to me then a few late bills. She's my baby Pei girl. I don't know what I'd do with out her :(

She looks so dreadfull right now, lots of road rash, bandages everywhere, and they have one of the protective collars on her. I'm going to miss her little curly Q tail. But she's alive & that all that counts.

It's great that she looks like she's going to be ok! A missing tail is a small sacrifice to keep her alive. I hope she can keep her legs though :( *hugs*

Sharpeigirl, I am SO sorry to hear of the pain you and Sassy have had to experience. I do hope she will recover soon. My heart truly goes out to you, I can only imagine the hell you've gone through and the suffering BOTH of you have had.
I am wishing with all my might for Sassy to recover and to come home to you soon.

Just got a call from the vet, she's going to take her left leg off monday, the damage wasn't just to the bone, but to the muscle & nerves also. Right leg seems to be doing okay, but she'll look at it Monday. She's been whineing alot from the pain, and isn't very happy with all the strange people handleing her, so they had to muzzle her every time  I love my vet so much, she's gone the extra mile today to try to help my Sassy Girl, she stayed way past closeing just for me. And she always has someone on call all night to keep an eye on everyone. Don't know much about Amputation on dogs, and if they have to take the right leg also, how can she move around?? :( :-?

I saw a program once about a dog who had lost the use of her back legs and she had learned how to shuffle round the house quite well !!
When she went out she had a little trolley to carry her back end that was attached to her with a harness, she chased her ball and played fetch too !!

Try not to worry though hopefully it will just be the one,you are lucky she is gonna make it by the sounds of it.......and by golly you could really deserve a bit of luck babe couldn't you

So sorry Sharpiegirl... :( I know Sassy will receive the best of care over the next few days. I hope for the best of outcomes for Sassy. Hugs from me and Ben & Jerry. Sending positive thoughts your way during this traumatic time. Hopefully there won't be more than the loss of her tail and one leg. Poor girl!

;) Pizza'a already here. And I think I'm going to watch Tradeing Spaces tonight, and try not to worry about my baby girl. The thing that's driveing me mad is, no tags jingleing, or wanting to out to go potty. And the her crate is so empty  :(

Dogs adapt well to having an amputation, much better than people. Within a week after Haley had her leg amputated (it was also horribly infected by the time it was taken off), she was getting around like she'd been that way forever. It is apparently better in most cases to take everything, and not leave any part of the leg, as the dog may try to use it and end up bruising/rubbing off the end of the "stump" in their attempts to use it. It will take some time for her to get the strength built up in her other legs, and until then, she'll get tired easily. If she's overweight, you should also try to get her slimmed down, as the excess weight is really bad for their joints. It's supposedly better for them to lose a back leg than a front, as 60% of their weight is carried by the front legs, so if one of them is lost, that's a lot of weight for the remaining leg. Most rear leg amputees that I've seen seem to be affected minimally from their "disability", they run, jump, dig, play, do everything they did before. Stairs may be a bit of a problem until she learns to deal with her "new" balance, so you may want to buy or make some sort of rear support for her if you have to do steps, I've seen them made out of blankets, towels, pretty much anything soft, and you want it wide to distribute the weight.

If they also have to amputate the other leg, you'll probably have to get her a cart to support her back end. There are numerous models out there now, some small and light for the "housedog type", some heavy-duty for dogs who like to be out and about.
