What's it mixed with?

For info provided to people considering adopting a general pit type dog:
http://www.pbrc.net/breedinfo.html

I know they are not suggested for first time dog owners.
You should look into BSL or pending BSL in your area.
You should carefully research the breed.
You should be willing to spend plenty of time excercising it.
You should take it to obedience.
I have known a two responsible Staffordshire Bull Terrier owners who have succesfully lived with their pups in apartments, just took a little work.

I think a pittie might be a good dog for you as long as you can exercise him/her often. It also depends on how dominant your personality is. If you are a pushover (like me!), this is probably not the breed for you. But if you feel like you could be comfortable handling a dominant or "pushy" dog, then check out the pup and the breeder :D

A Pit did cross my mind, but one thing to seriously think about is the idea of a Pit and a small animal, that could turn out disasterous. Most breeds can be taught to get along with small animals (with the exception of foxies and jack russels, they are very hard to get the killing instinct out of), but puppys can be CRAZY!!!! Its hard enough to get them to settle down normally, let alone have them be reasonable around a small animal. Plus if this is your first dog you don't want a dog that is dog aggressive. Dog aggressive dogs can be great pets, but as a first time owner the first sign of aggression will leave you heart broken, as all your dreams of having doggie visitors and having your dog play for hours with any dog it meets will be shattered.
A Keeshound sounds GREAT!!!!
A Turveren may not be ideal, but if you have found a good breeder I would strongly reccomend them over a BC.
Have you considered a dalmation? They are beautiful and if they are exercised regulary they can be great apartment dogs, plus you'll have the bonus of owning a head turner that no one will be able to walk past without going "oh, look at the Dalmation!!!"... you'd be very proud

Well, K you're like the expert on them, and if you don't think it would be a good idea then I won't do it. Thanks for helping me decide. :) But she is so cute! I got a picture. :( I hope she gets the perfect home for her though!
My list of "somday dogs" is getting very long... If I get a new dog every 10 years, so I'll always have 1 or 2 dogs, then I need to live for another 110 years! :o

I'm going to go check out the keeshond breeders now! One good thing about being home sick is that I can spend HOURS on internet doing dog reaserch! :) And yesterday I found out that I have access to someone who is very knowlegable with dogs! :)

Well. Ok. So. I'm happy! :banan: My mom called the Terv breeder today... she wasn't home. The other person who she talked to said that she'd call bakc before 10. It was 10.02 and I'd given up hope. And then a MIRACLE happened! she called! So I started gorging on cookies and staring at the computer screen, not seeing anything trying to overhear what was going on over the phone. It seemed like ages. :o Then my mom appeared out of the doorway... I was scared that the worst had happeened. But NO! :D And THATS the melodramatic version!

No, but seriously, it went pretty good and hopefully I'll be able to go visit this weekend, or week. I need my dad to drive me, and until 3 weeks ago I had refused to see him for a year. Dumb, yes, but things are ok wiht us now. He LOVES dogs, and they always like him too, which is something really great about my dad. I think he'll want to drive me, and he can help me lots with a dog. There are two pups left, Embla and Elliot. In the pictures I've seen they are the cutest of the litter! :) They have grown up with rabbits, which for me is fantastic since I have small animals too. So I'm hoping it'll all go well. And if it doesnt, it doesnt. Thats that. But I have fallen in love with the breed, and I don't think I could find a better breeder who charges a realistic price ($600 about).
IF it were to be the right pup, then it would be going to a show in November that she's signed it up for! Now THAT would be fun! :)

Oh they are just darlings!!!! Elliot is gorgeous!!! They are all gorgeous!!! Go for the drive, meet the pups, say you'll think about it and have a coffee and chat with your parents about it over coffee. Its easier to make the right disision if the breeder isn't standing right next to you while you discuss it, that also gives you a chance to think rationally about it without the cute little puppies making you make a decision that isn't right.
One peice of advice I have for you is to crate train it as a pup, I can't remember who it was who posted about their dog tearing things to shreds and they couldn't crate it because it barked, well don't fall into the same situation. Puppies DO CHEW!!! Especially apartment dogs and breeds such as the Turv who have lots of energy. I think that you can do this, I beleive that you will provide the adequete training and exercise for such an intellegent and energetic breed. And I'd love to see pics, I feel your excitement!!!

Thank you Aroura! :) I'm definatly going to crate train, and in fact I saw in a magazine yesterday that theres a sale on crates in a store close by! Not making a decision when the breeder is there is a good idea. I'm so happy! :)

Not only are they beautiful, they are silly little darlings too! I went to the breeder today, and met the puppies, parents, and some other grown dogs too. They were all really friendly, not at all reserved. The mom dog jumped up and started licking my face, and my dads too. The puppies did too, and were SOOO cute! But the dad dog is very active, and so are the puppies, so we're not going to get one of them. :( Too bad, but we can't have a perpetually moving dog. This spring/summer the breeder is going to have another litter, this time with a calmer dad dog. We met the mommy of the future litter, and she was oh so sweet! :)

But I don't want to wait until May to get my puppy. I'd rather get it before chrismas, if possible. I can maybe pursuade my mom to get 2 dogs, however... :evilbat: But now I'm going to look into some flatcoated retriever pups. They are expensive, but a dog expert I know said that 8-10 000 kr ($ 800-1000 about) is the "standard" price here for a purebred puppy. I'll keep looking at ads for mixes too, but I am so scared to get in contact with a byb. My dad said he'd call two breeders tonight, so I guess he'll call later and tell me whats going on.

One thing is for sure though- somday I want a tervuren! :)

I hope you realise that you CANNOT tell how active a dog will be as an adult by how it is as a puppy. Pretty much ALL puppies are active, always want to be doing something, get into trouble ect... That does NOT mean they will stay that way their whole lives. (The exception would be a breed that has a very low energy level. ) But all of the breeds that you like and are looking at SHOULD be active as puppies. And if the puppy WASN"T active and full of energy, chances are that there is something wrong with it and you shouldn't get it.

Sorry u couldn't get one of the Tervuren pups. But I do think u made the right decision, if u think u couldn't handle the activity level, then it's always best to go with u're instinct. :) Good luck on getting a Flat Coat, they're beautiful dogs! :)

Black GSD, I know all puppies are active, but the father was VERY active, and the breeder thinks that that has been pased on to the pups. I guess she sees the difference between these and others shes had, or something. And if the dad is so active, there is a bigger chance that the pups will be to than if the day was calm too, mabye. So I think its better to not get one of them. I am glad I got to see them, though. And someday, I WILL find a puppy that fits me perfectly! :)

Nea,
I DO believe that you made the right decission not to get one of the Terv puppies. It also sounds like you found a good breeder. The worst thing you can do is NOT listen to the breeder. He/She has been around the puppies since birth. And if they think that the pups will STAY very active, chances are they will! :D

IMO, any "breeder" that will just let you come to their house and pick out any puppy that you choose, without listening to the breeders input, is NOT the type of person you want to buy a puppy from.

Don't stress too hard, you'll find the perfect pup and then you'll never look back
A Flat Coat sounds great! Yeah, prices may be high but if the parents are health checked etc at least you can come with that reasural and know that your money was well spent. Check out the breeder, maybe see if you can track down anyone with pups from a previous litter who you can ask about the breeders future support and also how the pup has grown to be.
Again, good luck

if you are looking into flat coated retrievers, make sure you pay a lot of attention to the health problems in the breed. cancer, especially lymphoma, is prevalent and they are generally not very long-lived (the average being about 7-8 years).

http://www.fcrsainc.org/healthmanual/index.html

the breeds i would personally recommend are a standard schnauzer or pinscher (not the miniature pinscher tho), or if you want something with a lot of hair the eurasier. all three are of a good size for keeping in an apartment, lively yet not hyper and don't have exercise requirements you may not be able to meet.

I think I found my "perfect" puppy! :D :jumpie: She was friendly, but without being false or anything. She cared about her dogs, it was obious. The breeder yesterday had like 5 grown dogs. This one had 1, the momma dog. And she's keeping one of the puppies too. So she can heep attention and love on the dogs she has. The momma was sooo obedient! It was really amazing. And the momma was super friendly. The door opened, and this dog came right out and started waggin her tail and greeting us. Got us little "presents" of stiff grasses too! The puppy the breeder is keeping did lots of vigoruous licks in greeting. The one we might (hopefully!) get is a little less enthusiastic in the greetings, but just as freindly. He is the runt of the litter and wouldn't do that good as a show dog, at least not now as a puppy, thats why he wasn't sold yet. Others had asked and all, but she didn't want to sell him to them. He was perfect, or as perfect as possible.
I was thinking of perhaps getting a lab or golden, but purebred labs in Sweden are either so lazy they're kind of boring, or so energetic that they HAVE to be used as hunting dogs. Same with Golden Retrivers. According to the Valpf

Just over 15 weeks :D
Which means if you get him you'll have to get him into puppy classes and used to your home straight away because the crucial stage of socialisation is up to around 16 weeks, but it sounds like he comes from a loving home who has already worked on alot of the socialisation with him, but you can never expose him to too much! (So long as he isn't getting nervous!).
You're post nearly brought a tear to my eye, I always cry when I'm so happy, I cried when I got all of my dogs and I can feel your happiness, I hope it works out for you.
At least you will be able to keep in touch with the breeder and she can give you tips for search and rescue work!
Good luck, I hope this one works out for you!
