So I brought home a sweet little kitty on Saturday. She's 5 months old and bold as anything. She and Oscar - my 6-7 month old pup -- seem to be OK so far .... not that they have actually met face to face yet, but this morning we did open the door a crack and Oscar growled once and then just the sniff, sniff and never ending tongue! Emmy sat about a foot and a half away and just watched him - as if to say - what's all the fuss about, you big oaf!

so I think they're going to be OK together, which is good. This is my first kitty, so I'm open to suggestions or advice!

If you seperate them in two rooms with a baby gate, they can get to know one another through the gate, both sight and smell. I have found this a really good way to introduce a cat to the dog. The cat knows the dog cant get him, and so relaxes sooner, and the dog gets to sniff the cat without being whacked, which relaxes him more as well.

thanks everyone! I'm really excited about the kitty. they've sniffed through the door for a few days and I switched some of their bedding and stuff so I think tonight we'll put up the baby gate in the doorway and see how that goes. Oscar could easily jump over the gate, but he's actually afraid of it because he knocked it over onto himself when he was really little.

but they seem to be ok so far. he growled a little, but he stopped when I told him to stop. so yea! I'll try to get some pics of them up soon!

Just FYI - if the dog can jump the gate, put two up, on top of the other...

I had to do that once and iw stil worked out well

Good Luck!!

lol good idea. with my luck i'd forget and get up to pee in the middle of hte night and walk in to them. or hubby would and then you'd hear cussing every wrod yelling and the gates crashing to thefloor!

I don't know how much I can help...I bottle raised one cat around the dogs, and now she thinks she IS a dog. The hardest was training the dogs to ignore the pecking order when she was around. Everyone knows to NOT hurt the cats!

An update, for those who are interested .... Oscar is a bit scared of the baby gate because he knocked it over a few times as a pup, so he doesn't mess with it. But I decided the gate was a good idea, as long as I was there, of course. so up it went. and I think it went really well! Oscar didn't growl at all, his butt never stopped wiggling and he whined to play with the kitty. she bristled for a minute, but the she walked over to the gate and just walked back and forth while he sniffed her - it was so cute. then the kitty climbed all the way up the gate and I grabbed her before she plopped down on oscar's head.

dare I hope - they might be friends? we'll see how it goes when they really meet. Thanks!

keep a leash on him for the actual introduction...a cat unused to dogs (or just kind of nervous) will sometimes take off if the dog tries to instigate play, and the dog thinks the cat wants to play tag...of course, the cat is scared half to death and the dog is waiting for his turn to be the chas-ee. if you have a leash on the dog, you can stop the chase and let him know that this is unacceptable.
