Guest roo Posted October 5, 2003 Posted October 5, 2003 Has anyone got any information on strokes in dogs :( this is not for me, but a daughter of a girly i bred has suffered several strokes in the last 11 days  ........... sad yes but even sadder is the fact she was in whelp, her babies were born 1 week prem, an enormous litter (10) , she had a stroke prior to a emergency ceasar and of the ten mites born not even complete in hair, there are now 7, mother picked up after a few days, then her milk came, but she has suffered at least another stroke, she is now totally of her legs, she is feeding her babies, she crys when she wants to be turned over to her over side and crys when she needs a wee wee, she is eating, the vet says he feels no hope is left, but just to keep her going till the pups can be weaned, this is so heartbreaking................................. she is only 2 herself any ideas or info or advice would be greatly appreciated Roo Quote

zac850 Posted October 21, 2003 Posted October 21, 2003 The problem with giving pills to milking parents is that anything you give the mom will end up in the babies, so you need to watch out for them. is the mother in ICU or is she with the babies letting them milk? Good luck with her! Quote
imported_Kat Posted October 21, 2003 Posted October 21, 2003 If the bitch was in whelp especially with a large litter the cause was likely a calcium imbalance leading to a pre- eclampsia. This is a serious condition that produces seizures and posture imbalances with a typical head tilt, that resembles a stroke. Did the vet suggest this or try treating the bitch with intravenous calcium? Quote

These were my initial thoughts too, yes she was given calcium by the vet, but she suffered more strokes after the ceasar over a two week period. It is a very sad time for her owner  Quote
