Man arrested on dogfighting charges; 18 pit bulls seized

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

25 April 2003
WESTTOWN, N.Y. -- The publisher of an underground dogfighting magazine was charged with animal cruelty and dogfighting felonies, officials said.
James Fricchione's home was raided Wednesday by agents from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, police and animal handlers from the Humane Society of the United States.

Investigators found 18 pit bulls at the residence, about 55 miles northwest of New York City, most of which had signs of injuries consistent with those inflicted in dog fights, Orange County Assistant District Attorney Dave Hoovler said. Fricchione faces up to six years in prison if convicted of all counts.

Humane Society officials said Fricchione, 33, published the "Sporting Dog Journal," an underground magazine that networks known and suspected dogfighters.

Police also seized equipment used to train dogs to fight as well as other paraphernalia, Hoovler said.

Fricchione, who was released on $10,000 bail, had an unlisted phone number and couldn't be reached for comment.

Police are also investigating dogfighting suspects in Virginia and Georgia in connection with Fricchione's arrest, Hoovler said.

That article is about the journal from that site!

that website is definitely geared toward the dog fight fancier. a lot of those pictures are fighting dogs (past and present) and the stories on there are also about fighting dogs (i didn't read them though).

Not all Apbt's are big headed and fat dogs. Those dogs are actually the original Apbt's and what they originally looked like. most probably are fighting dogs but that is the way the are tested and preserved down through the years. The SDJ was shut down, the dogs were seized but as far as I have heard the acutal owner did not fight them he bred them. Anyways Apbt's are lean dogs the working or gamebred Apbt's look a lot like greyhounds but the backbones and hip bones should never be showing Show Apbt's are generally Heaviaer and have a bulkier appearance they are ususally a little over weight as the judges like them that way.

Thanks for bringing this up, but don't worry I love the APBT and have done lots of research on them. I did know this already, but it's still a good point. I'm glad the place was shut down though. Where did u get the info that they had shut down, and that the man who was breeding them wasn't fighting them? Just curious..... :D

The story about James Fricchione is a little off. He just recently bought the rights to take over publishing the Sporting Dog Journal. There were not, however, 18 dogs taken from him. They took 8 and he got them back.
He hasnt done anything but weight pull and shows for years.

I only had a brief look at the page, and don't know the truth in the articles, but those dogs all looked in pretty good condition to me, plus there were alot of champions in the bloodlines, there were no scars on the dogs (that I saw) and all the dogs had their natural ears (which I REALLY admire, can't stand cropped ears!).
Now I can't say I know too much about fighting, but the fact that there were leaner dogs said to me that this guy didn't fight, don't people fight the beefy ones? The fact that their ears were uncropped also said they probably weren't faught.
As for the chains, well I'm guessing they were chained up possibly because they were breeding dogs, I don't know, but I can't see an apbt breeder keeping 15 breeding dogs together in a house, unchained, it could turn out to be quite a blood bath. I'm not saying I agree with chaining, or with breeding so many dogs, all I'm saying is that from what I can gather there are alot worse people out there.
Just putting forward another view of the topic

No the thin ones are fought. The "beefy" look is for the showing dog...... :-? Some of the dogs on the site looked nice and well cared for, but others looked pretty bad, like the ones that are pictured sitting in dirt with a huge chain around thier neck. :-? I dunno what to think anymore.... :-?
