Guest Mutts4Me Posted September 24, 2003 Posted September 24, 2003 I'm wondering if there are any dog breeds native to India or the surrounding areas. Just because I'm interested in that area, and it might be cool to know. I know about the Tibetan terrier, mastiff, spaniel, and something else native to Tibet. Not India, but close enough :) I'd appreciate anything you know about the matter. A lot of you seem knowledgeable about breed origins. Quote
Sanvean Posted September 24, 2003 Posted September 24, 2003 The only dogs I've ever heard of from India are the "pariah dogs." They're actually supposed to make excellent pets, if you get them from puppyhood -- very smart and healthy, though they do have a high prey drive. Quote
Guest Mutts4Me Posted September 25, 2003 Posted September 25, 2003 Thanks for the reply! I can't find any substantial information about pariah dogs, except that they seem to be a classification of dog breeds, of which the Canaan dog is a prominent member. The Canaan dog apparently descended from the pariah dogs, but originated in the Middle East. They look like fascinating dogs though :) Quote
Sanvean Posted September 25, 2003 Posted September 25, 2003 Yes, they are very similar to the wild dogs on other continents: Canaan Dogs in the Middle East, Carolina Dogs in the U.S. and dingoes in Australia. I actually know a couple that has one. They were living in India and found him as a puppy. They said that he is a great pet, but they can't have cats or any other small pets because of the high prey drive. Quote
