Top Dog Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 A friend of mine is expecting a baby and is due next month and is considering another addition to the family in the form of a puppy. Is this a good idea or should she wait until the baby is older, does anybody have any advice either way? Anybody tried the people below? Quote
sheltielover Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 I totally agree with Kiwi....I would definately wait. I would LOVE to have a puppy, but being almost 6 months pregnant, I KNOW I can't handle it now, let alone when the baby comes! Quote
Angelboddy Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 I would also wait. I have 3 little ones, one which is 51/2 and in School. But the other two are only 2 and 1 years old. I babysit my friends dog 5 days a week which is only 3 months old now. Plus I have my dog (but she is a very good girl and sees me running all over the place............she goes and hides under the bed  ) But it is very hard, the puppy is clobbering over the children all the time and I have got to still take her out every 3 to 4 hours. And she likes to dig up the yard so I have got to watch her and get her back in right away. And she is always in the childrens faces and jumping on everything and into the litter box, or tormenting the poor kitty. Need I go on. :o Pups need just as much attention as the children, which my children are always fighting over something so i have to split them up, and they are into something, need to be feed and dipers changed. :( I am like a mad woman running back and forth to the pup and then to the kids. I sometimes wonder what I got myself into. :( It is a very hard job and the house is very full. :o She should be giving her undivided attention to the baby. At least for the first 3 months. :P Quote
Sanvean Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 My father brought home a new puppy when I was still tiny, and my mom said it was a major PITA. (The puppy -- a Dobie -- adored me, from what mom says, but she later decided nobody but my parents should be allowed to hold me, so she had to go to a new home.) Quote
Top Dog Posted September 19, 2003 Author Posted September 19, 2003 I hope that I can make her see sense because I dont think it's the best of ideas myself but she is so hard to convince once she has her heart set on something. Has anybody got any ideas of how to go about this......Does anybody know of any books or something like that to try and get her to change her mind? Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 a good breeder would not sell a puppy to someone who is 8 month pregnant Quote
atghylin Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 Ask her to wait a few weeks or months. She'll get her puppy but it would be best to wait a while first. Her other option is to adopt an older puppy(6 months old at least) or young adult dog. If the dog has been cared for properly she would have less training to do and more playtime with both baby and puppy. Just so you know, I too wanted a puppy while pregnent with Kurtis, my youngest. But my husband convinced me to wait. However, when an opertunity for a 6 month old male Cavalier, a breed I've wanted for years, came up he took the chance to adopt Felix. Kurtis was 5 months old and firmly established into a rutine while Felix came from a loving home that had housebroken him for me. All I had to do was obdience train him. That fortunately for us proved almost too easy. Felix was pretty much out of what I loving refer to as the puppy stupids stage. This stage differs for each dog and should be seriously considered when adopting a new puppy or dog into a family with infants. With the best of luck, Blessed Be, Amanda Quote
