Guest Anonymous Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 OKay, I don't expect him to be cujo or anything, he's still just a puppy. And he's not excactlly a breed used for gaurding, and I don't really want a big gaurd dog or anything like that. But living out here, it's a bit scary by yourself sometimes, and it's always been nice to have a dog. With Blue or Hazel then when I felt scared I'd let them inside and I'd feel so much more safe ('pecially with Hazel! :o  ) but with Coal, it's almost EMBARASSING!!! Tonight I went out to Jared's, then we came back here... we get up on the porch and here this "thud thud" and Jared goes "I think your dog's under the porch" I was like "ugh  COAL! It's okay, you can come out now" and he kina gave off a little wimper. And so I crouched down and in an excited voice was like 'Come on Coal! Come!" and he poked his head out and looked around. Then Jared leaned over at him and ZOOM back under the porch. So finally Jared was like 'I'll get him out" and ran into the yard and called him and Coal came runnin out (well, scuffle, the porch is a bit of a tight squeeze for him now  ) and ran after Jared. He LOVES Jared, so he wasn't scared of him. But he always does that! When someone comes here, ZOOM, Coal is hidding under the porch! He loves people, he's not scared of them or anything, once we get him out then he just loves them up. But how's that going to look if someone comes to rob us *knock on wood* and our dog runs and hides??? :o Is there anyway I can get him to be nut such a... umm... wuss? Quote
DogPaddle Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 It probably safer for Coal to be a wuss - if someone does come to rob your house they might think twice about murder but probably won't even think once about killing a dog that seems threatening. Does he bark before or as he runs for cover? If so that should be enough to keep most criminals away. Quote
Malamum Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 If someone tried to rob our house Indy would probably lie on his back on the floor and say if you rub my tummy I'll help you carry the stuff to the car    Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 We've got three 'watch dogs' and one 'guard dog'. Donna and Tessa will both bark if they hear something, but will run up wagging tails if someone actually enters the yard. Puddles just wont stop barking until someone picks her up and introduces her to the person. Lily, well Lilys the scary one, I wouldn't break into someones house if I saw Lily!!! No tail wagging, just pure guarding instinct (well thats what boxers were bred for, right? ) I have to introduce her to people before she will give a little tail wag of exception. Willem has a friend who is over nearly every day, well he's a real brat and I wouldn't trust him, nor does Lily. Even though she sees him every day, every day when she sees him she goes off, not biting or anything, just standing in front of him, hackles up, barking and growling her little head off I've never actually introduced her to him (to be honest I wish he'd stop coming over!). She's harmless, but at least I feel safe around her, even walking at night. Still, although I'm happy to have such a great guard dog before I got her even with just Tessa the house was safe. A simple warning bark is enough to keep most bugulars away  Quote
Angelboddy Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 Nostalgia will bark if she sees anyone walking down the street. And all her hair just stands up. But if someone would come to the door, they might feel alittle threatend. She will bark with the hair all standing up and run full speed to the door while barking still. :-? People are always jumping back, but she would never hurt them. Maybe if coal was around other dogs that bark if someone comes near the home? The pup I pup-sit 5 times a week has now caught on to Nostalgia and is barking at everything that moves. It's kinda cute to see a 3 month old pup be all bad to the bone and bark. Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 Rowie just gives a warining bark and then goes up tp them wagging her tail.... Malamum that is adorable! :D Quote
midori115 Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 oscar is my little watch puppy -- he has no fear. whenever something makes noise outside his hair goes up and he barks. when someone comes to the door he's right there barking up a storm. it was really cute, but now i'm trying to break him of it a little. courtnek Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 He'll be fine. Coal's (and most dogs) guarding instincts dont hit full force until they are about 8 months old. Right now he's just a baby still... You might see a different tune if a strnager showed up. He knows Jared and he is still a puppy. When he grows up a little more you may see a change, but remember, Labs are not a guarding breed. Most dogs will warn, Labs included, by barking, but dont expect him to act like a guard dog. That's not what he was bred for. Quote

I don't expect him to be a gaurd dog really, I should have said Watch Dog, never really thought there wa sa difference :) yeah, I figure he'll get better when he's older... He's about 7 months now. He does give a big WOOF then runs and hides  But if he's inside he barks and barks and goes RUNNING to the door, but then when the people come in he's all wags!  Last night he was eating his supper when Jared came over and he starts barking and there was dog food EVERYWHERE! He didn't even wait to swollow! It was so funny (but gross ot clean up :-? ) Quote
