   :o :o    :x :x :x
Zoey has pushed it to the limits on counter surfing and has now earned her self a KENNEL ( for me that's good, bad for her ) today i was in the kitchen and i SAW HER get up on the counter and take my loaf of bread, so she got in serious trouble.. then today we were gone for 1 hour and come home to a note pad Shreddeed, which i might add was on the counter pushed far back against the wall..
GRRRRRRRRRRRR she makes me so mad....
so now when we go somewhere, she is kenneled... grr.. sorry needed to vent. i dindt' want to kennel her, becuase whats the point of having a rottie for protection ( and companion of course, but she's my guard dog when dh is gone ) if she has to be kenneled up.. :drinking: :drinking:

It took 10 months to housetrain Kavik using a crate - at the end of which he could be trusted in the house alone for 6 hours (we gradually started working up to this after 8 months.) The concept is this the dog is not able to indulge in bad behaviours so he/she doesn't devolop (or maintain) the habit so when he/she is allowed out it just does not occur to him/her. You start with just 15 min loose and if the dog is good he gets more time out, if he is bad - back in the crate while your out. This is usually very effective. Of course, you have to limit temptation with most dogs even when they are house trained - no steak on the floor etc, some suggestions for much later:

1. Garbage cans with lids, and take out often - especially if something in their might smell good to fido
2. No food stored anywhere but in cupboards.
3. No paper products in dog accesable locations with exception of tp on roll, close bathroom door.
4. House very tidy, remotes for tv etc out of reach, no kids toys close or bags lying around.
5. Cables and wires tucked out of the way.
6. Laundry in covered baskets - I am not kidding on this one, unless you like underwear with holes chewed in them.
7. All cleaners or other harmful products in cupboards with babylatches.
8. You get the idea, its just like babyproofing your house, you can also get babygates to block off some sections of the house, for instance we block off the stairs so the dogs can't go upstairs and the cats can. No burglers are going to break in upstairs . . . I think :o

I know it seems annoying now but a few months of crating now and you should hopefully have your protection dog loose in your house for years later. Good luck, and I'll wish me good luck too . . . Zaphod is still Eat Dog , I'm wondering if I'll have to look into a muzzle just so he won't eat something that will kill him one day . . . . . .

LOL I understand your frustration. Indy is the same.

We always have to keep an eye on him as he is forever getting stuff off the benches. Though in his case I think he does it for attention most of the time

Since he can't be trusted inside on his own he is left outside when we go out. However I was pleasantly surprised a few days ago. I must have not shut the door properly and when we came home there he was inside. I quickly ran round the house to take stock of the damage and was quite surprised that there was none.

Zoe is still quite young isn't she? I'm sure if you keep things out of her reach and keep letting her know that counter surfing is not acceptable, she will grow out of it.

Zoey is 9 months old.. We can leave the trash can out ( we have a lid on it ) they do good with that, we normally have everythign off the counter, but she will still find ways to get things. today the note pad was all thew ay sitting up againt eh wall ago 4 feet away fromt he edge of the counter.. AND SHE STILL GOT IT... she's been eating the mail too. we keep them babygated in our kitchen/dining room ( it's on big room) but now Cody will still have free rein, but Zoey will be kenneld up in the living room so that she can't see Cody being able to be free... or wait. maybe she should and she can see how good he is being and then she will start to be good. i just have to get a grip on this otherwise i'll loose it while hubby is gone to Iraq ( she is his dog. )

I am so sorry you are going though this. :(

I can't really help you with this, because I have never had this problem with Nostalgia. :-?

Which Is such a relief. :D
I can leave the kitty's bowl of food on the ground and Nostalgia won't get into it. :o

I pointed at it the first time I put it down and said, "NO!" And she never got into it. :o

I can put chicken bones in the trash and leave the house to go somewhere and come back, and the chicken bones will still be there. :D

Is there anyway you can just keep her out of the kitchen?
That way she can still be your guard dog.............just not in the kitchen.

we lock tem up in the kitchen so they don't eat the carpet ( i have a hole the size of a half dollar in it already :o ) so we dont want them to ruin anything in here... ( the couch, carpet, kids toys )

DogPaddle,

I hear ya about #6 !! :o Our Gretchen (Lab/Rott) just loves the laundry baskets !! (clean) I never thought about removing the laundry baskets from the living room before we'd go ...... and we'd get back and her laundry of choice is ; washclothes, socks, underwear, and kitchen towels. :-?
She'll nab'em from the basket and then the 2 Jacks get into the act and they play tug of war with her "item" of choice !! :x
We've come home to find many shredded socks, undies, and washclothes !! :o
Now I've smartened up.... I remove those too !! (the laundry baskets that is !!)

there is a harmless way to fix this. Buy a number of standard mousetraps.
Set them on the counter and throw a blanket over them. Leave something "tempting" on the counter (food, usually) and when she jumps up to get it the mousetraps will trip under the blanket. She wont be hurt,
but the noise and the scare usually keep them from counter surfing from then on.

Alsso, it's a correction that doesnt involve YOU, so you're not the bad guy....

I was about ready to post something like this about Sassy, if she finds paper towels lying around, she'll grab them & eat them  And she also counter surfs no matter how many times we've done the mouse trap trick, she just looks at me like, yea so what  She's so frustateing sometimes. But I guess that's a Sharpie dog for ya

This probably is not the thread to start this topic but DeafAussieLover...I was wondering if your Aussie is your first deaf dog? And how you find living, training and her interaction is with other dogs? I have never owned a deaf dog, and I am sure in the future I will since I have already felt a pulling towards adopting a few. I would love to know what you have experinced owning one. And anyone else who also owns one.

Your dog is stunning by the way! I just love the markings, and that freckled nose just melts me!

Courtnek, I've used that mousetrap trick, only I tossed some newspaper over it. I was using it mainly as a diversion to my counter creeping cats. Thankfully, my cats are all now FLOOR dwellers (I don't mind sharing furniture with any of my critters, but my kitchen counters are OFF LIMITS... kitty gritty cat crap feet and surface where food is prepared.... yick).

Regarding surfers and chewers, anyone else ever give up and just start leaving around non-edible, yet harmless, items? Things like toilet paper rolls, bits of plain paper and such? My interior decor is interesting, to say the least (nothing says class like tp rolls on coffee tables).

yea, unfortunately, it doesnt work for ALL dogs....bummer.

I got my Golden to stop stealing food by putting a HUGE pile of peanut butter on the table, and putting the water up...Without the water the peanut butter was a job to swallow, he never stoile anything off the table again. You HAVE to be there for this correction...

Some dogs wont respond to that either. The only choice left is to NOT leave anything up there they are interested in...

I have also heard you can leave bait attatched by thread to a tin can with something loud in it so when the steal it it makes noise.

I have been told you can put very spicey people food out as bait - you should test first to make sure it is not to exteme, again you should be home for this and have bread and water ready just in case you misinterperet the spiceness of the food. Apparently this is best done over time so the dog thinks - everything on the counter burns my mouth!
