I have seen dogs do shutzhund training, I wouldn't so much classify it as a sport but rather a discipline (by discipline I mean this meaning - Training expected to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior, especially training that produces moral or mental improvement. Controlled behavior resulting from disciplinary training; self-control. A systematic method to obtain obedience: a military discipline. )
I might also consider it a job or similar to obedience. It is very useful for police dogs.
My question is this - I have never seen a dog do shutzhund while tethered, has anyone else heard of this? Also, forgive my ignorance, but is this a bulldog or an APBT or an Am Staff Terrier or some other mix?

Anyone know the history of the American Bulldog, I know its not AKC or CKC regd, and that the goal was to produce a more atheletic dog presumably closer to the very old version of the breed but how did they do that, what other breeds did they incorporate etc?

i don't know too much about ab's but i can tell you they are very closely related to pit bulls. many of them look exactly the same except for size (although we do have 120lbs pits now). they are generally mostly white in color. and they are absolutely adorable!

this is quite a topic of debate among pit bull fanciers. some believe that there is no way possible that a dog originally 35-ish pounds, could eventually be bred up to 120 pounds. they maintain that other breeds such as mastiffs were introduced to gain size. the originator of eddington bloodlines, openly admitted mastiff blood in his dogs. others think that through selective breeding you could dramatically increase the size of these dogs. some dogs are obvious crosses, they LOOK like mastiffs. but others are harder to determine. really there is no way of knowing, even papers can be forged, quite easily at that.
as for 80 pounds, i think most people would note that it's rather large for an apbt but it is believable that the dog could be purebred (provided it looks like a pit, haha). but dogs that are in the 100+ pound range are generally very questionable.

Yes I have heard of dogs being tethered while doing schutzhund. And the dogs love it. It's a game to them, a fun one. I read somewhere that some dogs are teathered because you give the relase command, some dogs who have a high prey drive will go back for another bite which can be dangerous to the "bait person" if he's not expecting it. BTW this "sport" does not make dogs people aggressive. As I have said it is a game to the dogs. Although I've heard of pits and american bulldogs competing in schutzhund, the most common breeds are german shepherds and rotties.

I saw a special on TV once about Schutzhund. Maybe Animal Planet or Discovery, I don't know. But as LuckyChaos mentioned, it appears to be a game. It's about obedience, and sport. The dogs have to be very focused. Though I didn't see any tethering in the show I watched. But anyway, the dogs, when not performing, seem to be very happy, healthy animals, who are very focused on their owners. It did seem very aggressive to me, kind of scary, but I'm a pacifist who's easily un-nerved by violence, especially involving animals, lol.

On an off note, regarding the earlier conversation about American Bulldogs, I believe "Chance" in Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey is an American Bulldog:

In the book, the character is actually a bull terrier, but that's what happens with movies ;)

Yeah me too. I saw it once at this pet show thingy i went too andit was really loud but the dogs looked great. You really have to have a dog with a certin personality, who's not afraid of loud noises for this type of work.
