midori115 Posted September 15, 2003 Posted September 15, 2003 I know a lot of you all have both dogs and cats in your homes and I'm looking for some advice. My puppy, Oscar, is about 6 months old - male - and has never met a cat. My other half has had cats before, but not with dogs. He has decided he wants to get a cat -- and I've never had a cat of my own, but I think I'd love to have one! So I'm looking for advice ... how old should the cat be? .... is it better to get a female cat? is this really a bad idea? I think I'm a little nervous ... I've introduced 2 dogs, but that's about it. and they loved each other immediately .... Thanks! :D Quote
Angelboddy Posted September 15, 2003 Posted September 15, 2003 You can get as young as a 8 week old kitty. As long as you introduce them slowly. Does not matter what sex the kitty is. Since your pup is only 6 months old, I would say it should be a little easier to introduce them. Good luck, and hope this helps some. Quote
Sanvean Posted September 15, 2003 Posted September 15, 2003 Well, it would depend on your doggie's personality. If he's boisterous, I would go with an adult cat (who has already been around dogs) or an older kitten. If he's more gentle and laid back, you can go with a littler one. (However, please give some though to the adults! They are so rarely adopted. It breaks my heart at pet adoptions when everyone passes by the sweet older kitties to play with the tiny kittens.) Sex shouldn't matter much, as they're different species. I would probably avoid a shy or skittish kitty, as this could be exacerbated by your puppy. Quote
Aonir Posted September 15, 2003 Posted September 15, 2003 Make sure your dog knows that kitty isn't a toy... and kitten knows that dog biting on it isn't a good thing... I'm having a problem keeping my puppy to stop chewing on my kitten! Then, my puppy won't go near any of my other cats - because their big and defend themselves. AND my kitten showed a grown dog whos boss ... It can go in a big complicated circle! Quote
