Which would you say was the best all around dog breed to have?

Which would you say was the worst all around dog breed to have?

Welllllllll... that's kind of a tricky question. I think it depends a lot on individual circumstances. Fenced yard, acreage, no yard, apartment, house, other animals in the household, children or not, level of commitment (some breeds do require more "commitment" than others in terms of grooming requirements, or exercise), region (nothing bugs me more than seeing northern breeds like Huskies here in the deep south... almost no one here keeps a Husky inside the house). I just can't think, even generally, of a best all around breed since there are so many variables.

Honestly, there is NO best dog and worst dog. I'm terrified of Labs and Rotties, but I don't think they are a worst dog.

Best dog breed.. The one from a responsible breeder and in the hands of a loving family.

The best dog breed: a properly trained and socialized, even tempered, well bred dog.

I personally lean to APBTs but that is neither here nor there. For my circumstances and needs this is my breed of choice. Now that i have had one, then two, and soon to be three. I cant see myself with anothr breed of dog. But of course everyone thinks that thier dog is the best, so I have to go with HF and Aonir on the answer. a well cared for one.

the worst any dog even if it is from the highest pedirgee and a direct offspring of GR CH dogs that is mistreated, ignored, not trained, chained out back and left to its own devices. DOgs need attention, love, direction, and patience. if you can provide that any dog will be good, some will work better depending on thier breeding and instincts, but happiness will ensue.

The are way to many factors involved in paticular dogs needs and attributes and the living circumstances, personality and care a prospective owner can provide to say there is one best or one worst dog. The best dog for a 70 year old in an aparmtment is not the best dog for a family with active kids between 8-12 on an acerage. So I guess I agree with most everyone else so far, the best dog is a healthy, well trained, well socialized dog that suites the owner and their lifestyle.

I have to agree with all of the above. The "best" dog is one who was purchased/adopted by a family or person who thought it all out beforehand, realized the kind of dog they have and what it's needs are,
and knows that it will need to be loved, well fed, protected, trained, and
well cared for. To date I have had:

Purebred Golden Retriever
Irish Wolfhound/Lab Mix (fostered)
Alaskan Malamute/Border Collie mix
Purebred Tibetan Mastiff (fostered)
Lab/Germ.Shorthair Pointer Mix (still have her)
Golden Retriever/Yellow Lab Mix
Purebred Foxhound (new family member)

You can see that none of these dogs are exactly the same, none of them are a specific type of breed. About the only place I havent gone is
Toy breeds, but that's because I like big dogs better.

So maybe "best" is the wrong term. Did you mean "favorite" perhaps?

Under "favorite" I tend to favor hunting/bird dogs, because their personalities suit me and my lifestyle.

That's right. I thought there was no best or worst dog. There are just un-educated lazy owners who have misbehaving dogs. They can't expect their dogs to act any better, can they.

You wont find us squabbling here about which breed is better. We ALL have different breeds. different situations, different lifestyles. We all agree to make our dogs lives the best we can. THAT'S the bottom line....

As the others have said there is no such thing as one breed being "better" or "worse" than another. I think suitable is a much better word - depending on your lifestyle and what you want out of a canine companion you need to find the breed that is suitable for you.

Yes, there are people that don't train their dogs. However there are also people who get a certain breed based on it's looks alone and are then surprised and disappointed when it does or doesn't act a certain way or if they can't "train" a specific characteristic out of it.
