Aonir Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 Give me a list of dog foods with their ingredients - listing the bads about them? Along with 'rules' to follow when picking dog food out.. I want to put a list on my website (once the server is up and I get my DSL back..) Quote
alicat613 Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 Meat: This should be the first (often even first few in some foods with several kinds) ingredient. You want specific - turkey, chicken, beef, etc, NO animal or poultry Grains: Watch for ingredient splitting (ie after the meat, there are 4 or 5 grain parts that make up more of the food than the meat). Look for whole nutritious grains like barley, whole oats, brown rice, etc, avoid wheat middlings, mill sweepings, gluten meals, brewers rice Avoid: Animal fat, animal protein, rendered anything, BHA/BHT, lots of colors, sugar, tallow When reading a label, you'll find a fat listed after the first ingredients, often in good foods this is vitamin E with mixed tocopherols. May also be beef or chicken fat. Everything after this is a negligible ingredient as far as what the food is really made of. Hope that helps! Ali Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 Wow, this is such an indepth subject. There is so much controversy on dog foods. Even though you have the ingrediants you never really know what those ingrediants are. It could be anything from chicken feathers to animal hair to rancid fats. Here are some links to research http://www.paradise-health.com/chemicals_in_pet_foods.html http://extratv.warnerbros.com/reframe.html?http://extratv.warnerbros.com/dailynews/consumer/02_01/02_27c.html There is tons of info on the internet on dog food. The question is what to believe. I would like to suggest a book for reading. I have found it to answer many of my questions on nutrition and it has greatly improved the health of my dogs lives. Dr. Pitcarins complete guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. I hope you get the oppurtunity to read this. I think it can really help what information that you put on your site. Quote
