courtnek Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 What's a good thing to clean dogs inside ears with? Laurel's seem dirty, and they're floppy, and they need to be cleaned. Freebee keeps trying to lick them clean....it's pretty funny.... but I need to know what to clean them with thanks. Katy Quote
Carolk9s Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 Katy, I can send Candy your way for a day or two, she's the official ear washer here. 8) Seriously though, she just makes it worse as now there's slobber down there along with wax, not a pretty (or nice smelling) end result. I generally get OtiCalm at my vets office but Petsmart and other pet supply stores carry ear cleaning solutions also. Make sure you do it outdoors, when they shake, that stuff flies EVERYWHERE. After I use the solution, I blot some out with cotton, let them shake theirs brains a bit looser, than blot again with cotton or tissue. Quote
courtnek Posted September 13, 2003 Author Posted September 13, 2003 Thanks Carol, I'll check out PetCo tomorrow for some earwash. It really is funny - Freebee is glued to her and licks her ears whenever she can. I think Freebee would have made a good mom dog...she licks my feet if they're dirty, (I walk around barefoot alot) my shoes, my hands, anything she considers unclean. If I have just washed off the counter, she checks it out. Poor Laurel is being followed around and "cleaned" whether she likes it or not. She doesnt seem to mind though. I wonder if they cleaned each others ears in the foxhound pack???? thanks Quote
julie45 Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 Has I worked for a vet for some years, I have seen them clean dogs ear's so often.and all they do really is get some cotton wool wraped round forcepts with a little warm water. So all I do is buy some cotton buds or a baby wipe and just clean the ear very carefully like that. But dont atepemt to go to far in side the ear. I have done it at work so many time's,So i do know how far to clean. So a good cotton bud with a little warm water should do the trick. good luck :) :) Quote
bk_blue Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 I have cleaned ears with cotton buds (never going where I can't see) and olive oil, and tissues and warm water. Doing the dachshunds were a lot easier than doing BK, because you could just sit on them and there wasn't much they could do about it, BK is a lot bigger and more agile. So his have only been done once. His are quite clean by nature anyway thankfully.  Quote
imported_Kat Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 Ordinary cooking oil or vegetable oil. Use a few drops in each ear with a syringe if you can, massage the ear well especially at the base of the ear to float any wax then use a rolled up tissue to remove and clean the wax. Its more effective than eardrops and should be done as a routine practice every so often regardless of waxy ears or not, but no cotton buds! They are lethal and can perforate the thin covering of the dogs ear drum. Quote
