Guest Anonymous Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 hi everybody well i learnt alot from the messages here, but i have one main problem, i have a six months old female neapolitan mastiff, she lives outdoor in the garden and she has her own house and a fenced garden around it where she spends most of her time, i have tried a lot of methods of housebreaking including the newspaper and the wire crate, i even bought different kinds of that stinky spray that they claim helps housebreak dogs, but whenever i spray it on a newspaper a minute later the newspaper is shredded, i shout to her and try to do everything possible to prevent her from eatting it, but nothing seems to work, so plz if any of the very experienced dog owners here have any info or hints plz dont hesitate to share them, thanks Quote
Sanvean Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 So....your dog lives outside, but you're having a problem with her going INSIDE the house, is that right? Quote
DogPaddle Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 If the dog spends almost all of its life outside it will not consider your house its den and will therefore be hard to house train. Most dogs are happier indoors with their family a good portion of their time anyway so move him indoors more. If the dog is indoors and you cannot watch him, put him in the crate or outside. (Dog should not be in crate more than 8-10 hours a day and preferably no longer than 7 - 8 hours at a time for an adult dog and if you want the dog to think of your house as its den you may as well apply those time periods to putting it in the yard too.) If the dog is quick and sneaky you may have to leash him to you in the house at the outset. If the dog is in the crate or in your site it will not be able to mess in the house and will therefor be broken of the habbit, also the more its in the house the more it will treat it like a den and keep it clean. If this is an adult dog training may take more time. You may also want to make use of a schedule to help the dog with this process. If this seems nec. you can pm me if you'd like about sched and use of crate in sched. Quote
