My 7 month old Shih Tzu has recently been doing something new. I am concerned it may be an early symptom of epilepsy and I am hoping someone can shed some light on his behavior for me. The best way I can describe it is that he will be sitting there smacking his teeth together for what seems like no reason. I pray that it's nothing as I had a Maltese with epilepsy and it was horrible for him. Does anyone know what is going on?

THANK YOU!!!

All of my male dogs do this after they have smelled another dogs urine or if they have just finished licking a female...in her privates...yuk! their mouths almost seem to chatter...I beleive it has some thing to do with the scent...I have never noticed if any of my females do this...
To ease your mind you should have a physical exam done on your dog and bring this up with your Vet.
Good luck.

It dose not sound like epilepicy. I agree with Cassie though. If you are at all worried bring him to the vet. While it is proubly nothing, it would be worth it to rest your mind.

my staffy X kelpie (female) does something that sounds like this when she has got a really interesting/strong/new smell...... but as all the others say - get it checked if you are at all worried: our pup's health is worth the money!!! (I've spent over $12,000 Australian and still counting on this dog!)

Our old dog used to do this when she was exited like when we came home after work, the more fuss we made of her the more she would do it! But I should get it checked out anyway just to be on the safe side. We did get Lucy checked and the vet said she was fine.
