dog soiling in house

Hi! I am new here and hope someone can help. My seven year old mixed breed (big dog - 105+ lbs) has recently started urinating and defecating on the living room carpet once or twice a week. This is very unusual behaviour for him. He had an accident this morning and shortly after we had scolded him and cleaned it up he went right back to the same spot and urinated while looking right at me!! Any ideas about where I can start to solve this problem would be welcome. This dog has always had regular shots and veterinary care and has been on the the same dog food for several years. No recent changes in lifestyle, schedules etc. We own another dog and 2 cats and they have all been living together happily for years. Thanks for your help!

Excellent advice Mei-Mei!

stressedwayout - The only thing I can add to what Mei-Mei said is, I know its stressful and weird for your dog to being doing this but try to relax, its likely nothing you did and probably your dog is not doing it just to spite you (although quite late in our housetraining process I'm pretty sure Zaphod messed in the house for just that reason - he can be very stubborn) so its likely you'll be able to find the cause/solution soon. Let us know how the Nature's Miracle or similar pet smell remover works and what your vet thinks, ok?

At 7 years old the above replies are right - he could be getting incontinent due to age. 105 is a good sized dog. He may also be upset about something, or even ill. I think a vet visit is your best bet.

He could have a urinary tract infection, or a stomach parasite.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions! We are currently on vacation with our dogs and hoping a change of scenery will help all of us! Will take your advice for cleaning the carpet as soon as we get home. We have also changed our dogs' feeding time from morning to evening as most of the soiling is taking place in the mornings - hoping a change of feeding pattern might help as well as evening feedings fit in better with our curent lifestyle. And if all else fails a vet checkup seems like a good idea - better to be safe than sorry! Will let you know how it goes.... and thanks again!!
