gooeydog Posted August 13, 2003 Posted August 13, 2003 It seems that Annie just realized today that she's a Dachshund, and that Dachshunds are hunting dogs.... I spent almost 1/2 hr trying to convince her to come out from under our shed after she apparently found some sort of animal under there, and was holding it hostage by barking incessantly :o This was after I dragged her out from under a buch of junk inside the shed, where she was barking up a storm and digging at an old cabinet. As I turned to go up to the house, she dove under the shed, not to be seen again for a while  I'm just glad that whatever it was she had under there didn't fight back :o Anyway, I'm hoping she'll forget about the new and fascinating "toy" under there, but if not, how do I get her to leave these things alone? Of course, it didn't help that when I tied Goo to the door so I could look under the shed, she crouched down and started barking too, as if she was trying to egg Annie on  And this is on top of the fact that Annie's been trying to attack Haley through the babygates, and tore an ear while out playing the other day, which has been bleeding on and off for three days now. If anyone's looking for a CHEAP mini Dachshund, I think we might have one available  Quote
courtnek Posted August 14, 2003 Posted August 14, 2003 You wont be able to stop her from wanting to get under the shed...the hunters instinct is too strong..... you could try putting black pepper around the area she is trying to get at - one strong sniff and she'll have a sneezing fit and that may discourage her (it wont hurt her, trust me) but sometimes the instinct will even get around that. You can even try to put the black pepper under the shed, and maybe it will drive out the intruder. Moth balls under the shed might work too, but put them far enough in that the dachsund cant get them. other than that, you may need to get animal control out to get whatever animal is under there out of there. Alex tried to dig up the whole area around the shed to get under it at some animal.....I think he scared it, cuz it left on it's own. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted August 14, 2003 Posted August 14, 2003 Instinct bites it sometimes. Brianna my dobie was obssesed with squirrels i swear she had a world record prey drive, anyway one day she lucked up on a squirrel that was behind a tree and nearly caught it. everyday for over from then on when we walked to that spot she would creep around to the spot where that squirrel was even though it was never there again. she would look for it and then look up into the tree to see if she missed it again. its was so cute. I know that doesnt really fit your situation as your dog is made to go in a get 'em but i have to jumpat a chance to tell a story about my baby-girl. Quote
